Bernie and AOC drop BOMB on Trump amid shutdown
Hey everybody, I was walking here in. Washington DC and who did I bump into? One of my favorite members of the United. States Congress, Alexandria Kaziocortez, >> one of my favorite senators. >> All right. Um, anyhow, as everybody. knows, we are now in a government. shutdown. Uh, Republicans are attacking. Alexandria, attacking me. Why didn't you. vote for this clean CR to keep the.
government open? >> Well, there's nothing clean about it. This is one of the dirtiest tricks that. is being pulled on the American people. right now. Starting today, October 1st, and throughout the rest of the month, Americans across the this country are. going to start getting notifications. that their insurance premiums are up to. doubling. We're talking about. >> Say that again. Your insurance, your. monthly insurance premiums are going to. double for millions of people across the.
country. >> at a time when we already paying by far. the highest prices in the world for. healthcare at a time when people can't. afford it right now. So what happens? >> That means people getting bankrupt over. chemotherapy, people going to the. pharmacy and not being able to get their. insulin. And frankly, it means a lot of. Americans are going to be in danger. and. Republicans want us to rubber stamp. that. So, what are we gonna say to that, Bernie? Well, I'll tell you that's not. only be in danger. Let's be clear, and.
I'm not doesn't make me happy to have to. say this, but there have been studies. out there that when you combine doubling. premiums for the ACA and then throwing. 15 million people off of Medicaid and. the ACA, the result is, according to. studies at Yale and the University of. Pennsylvania, 50,000. lowincome workingclass Americans listen. every single year. All right. If you.
don't have the money to go to a doctor. and you're sick, you die. And that's. what we're looking at. That's what this. clean bill is about. >> And so Republicans want us to rubber. stamp that. And we're saying no. We need. to stand up for the American people. We. need to stand up for our health care. system. And if they want our votes, they. need to make sure that we're protecting. every American and making sure that we. can do what we can to continue to make. health care accessible, affordable as we. work to make it a human right for all.
>> Right? So, let me just back that up. Remember, right now, our health care. system is broken. Right now, we're the. only major country on Earth not to. guarantee healthcare to all people. And. these guys want to make it even worse. We're not going to let that happen. >> No, we're not. That was Bernie and AOC. making it abundantly clear what the. stakes are in this shutdown in a video. that's reached millions of people. online. Here's the simple reality. The. Democrats who are in the minority have. settled on one thing as a red line in.
exchange for their votes to reopen the. government to extend ACA subsidies so. that health care costs for 24 million. Americans don't double or triple seems. like a pretty reasonable ask. an ass. that would also benefit Republicans in. red states, by the way, which I'll get. to in just a moment. And even though. Trump needs Democratic votes to keep the. government open, he and his mouthpieces. are just sitting here pretending. pretending that what the Democrats are. asking for is health care for. undocumented immigrants. >> They want to have illegal aliens come. into our country and get massive health.
care at the cost to everybody else. And. we don't have it. And that's that's I. would say the number one reason that. they want to strike is to get illegal. immigrants healthcare. And you know. Gavin Newsome wants that too in. California and it's destroying. California. We can't have that. We're. not going to let it happen. >> The original thing they did with this. negotiation, it was a $1.5 trillion. spending package. Basically saying to. the American people, we want to give. massive amounts of money, hundreds of. billions of dollars to illegal aliens. for their health care while Americans.
are struggling to pay their health care. bills. That was their initial foray into. this negotiation. We thought it was. absurd. We told them it was absurd and. now they come in here uh saying that if. you don't give us everything that we you. that we want, we're going to shut down. the government. We think that's. preposterous. We think it's totally. unacceptable and we think the American. people are going to suffer because these. guys won't do the right thing. >> Here's the deal. This is a bald-faced. lie. I'm going to say this. unequivocally. Undocumented immigrants. are not eligible for a single dime of.
health care funding in the ACA. marketplace. They are not eligible for. ACA subsidies and continuing those. subsidies does not afford a single. undocumented immigrant healthcare. Period. And don't take my word for it. Look at healthcare.gov's own website. This is a site run by the Trump. administration which says, quote, "People in these groups can get coverage. through the marketplace if they're. eligible. United States citizens, US. nationals, lawfully present immigrants. Undocumented immigrants can't get. marketplace health coverage. Period. But.
Trump is just that desperate to prevent. Americans from having affordable. healthcare. And so he's straight up. lying about it. And as I mentioned. before, it's not just Democrats who he's. hurting. In fact, it is. disproportionately Republicans in terms. of new eligibility signups. According to. the Kaiser Family Foundation, enrollment. in marketplace plans reached 24.3. million for 2025, up from 11.4 million. in 2020. That's growth of 113% for those. 5 years. Almost all states have seen.
some level of increase since 2020. However, there are six states where. enrollment more than tripled and all of. them were won by President Donald Trump. in the 2024 election. The highest. increases were in Texas and Mississippi. where enrollment grew by 255% and 242%. respectively. In Louisiana and West. Virginia, enrollment increased by 234%. while Georgia saw an increase of 227%. Enrollment rose in Tennessee by 221%. Overall, the study found that enrollment. grew by 157% on average in states won by.
Trump, while it increased by an average. of 36% in states carried by former Vice. President Kla Harris. Enrollment on the. exchanges has more than doubled in 20. states since 2020, according to the. report. In other words, Donald Trump. will screw over Republicans in need of. health care, all because he wants to. make this into a pretend fight against. the Democrats when in reality he is. screwing over his own voters. He's. screwing over 24 million Americans and. pretending that the real villain here is.
undocumented immigrants who in reality. get nothing. There's also a financial. reason that Trump is hellbent on making. sure that healthcare is stripped away. Think back to the original budget that. Republicans just passed a few months. back. Trump and Republicans handed a. gigantic tax cut to millionaires and. billionaires. It blew a massive hole in. the deficit. In order to offset that. hole, Republicans need to make spending. cuts somewhere. So, where do they make. those cuts? They took a trillion dollar. axe to healthcare. This way they could. enact the largest transfer of wealth. from the poor to the rich in this.
country and not create as large of a. hole in the deficit as they would have. done without the healthcare cut. Granted, there's still a $4 trillion. deficit, but as far as Republicans are. concerned, that's better than 5. trillion. And it's worth it if it means. they get their precious tax cut. And so. what this tells us is that Republicans. are perfectly willing to strip. healthcare away from the most vulnerable. Americans if it means getting to keep. just a little bit more wealth for. themselves. cutting these ACA subsidies. is merely an extension of exactly that. line of thinking. I spoke with Elizabeth.
Warren about exactly that point. Here's. what she had to say. >> It's it's definitely about the money and. they just didn't want to have to face. the fact that they would be upping the. deficit even more. But you know what. part of this is? It's a fundamental. question of do you want a government. that works for people? And if you really. think that the job of government is just. to help out the billionaires and keep. the masses quiet enough that they will.
work in your uh your fulfillment centers. and not re and and pave your roads and. mow your lawns and not raise any. problems. If you think that is the role. of government, then the Trump. administration is for you because that's. the direction they're pushing everything. they can. But if you genuinely think. that the role of government is to be on. the side of people and to try to help.
build a safety net for folks so that if. your grandma outlives her savings and. has to be in a nursing home or your. cousin has a baby that runs up a million. dollars in medical bills in the first. month or your neighbor gets hit by a bus. and needs a wheelchair. or a home health. aid. that we can be there for each other and. government is the way to do that. So I. think it's both things. They wanted to.
be able to give that money to the. billionaires. But I think also they. don't want government to work for. families. And health care is a place, geez, what's so ironic here? The health. care system is already broken, right? Already not working. And their answer is. make it worth less. Make it more painful. for people. Make it more costly for. people. make more people say government. is not on my side. That's what the.
Republicans want, >> right? So they can use that as a pretext. to say this way we should privatize. everything. We should privatize social. security. We should privatize the post. office, not have to pay for anything, not have to worry about spending federal. uh uh revenues on on these pesky little. projects. This way we can keep giving. ourselves tax cuts and not feel like we. have to offset it with something. >> That's right. >> To watch the full interview with. Republican voters, to independent. voters, to Democratic voters who are. disillusioned with the party. I want you. to realize that this is not a Republican. versus Democrat fight. Trump wants it to. be red versus blue, but it's not. This. is one billionaire who's trying to take. your health care away by pitting you. against brown people who are not even. eligible for healthcare subsidies in the.
first place. He wants vulnerable white. people fighting vulnerable brown people. so that no one's paying attention to the. billionaire trying to consolidate more. power and more wealth who has no need. for ACA subsidies. Like, let's be clear, this guy doesn't give a about the. ACA because it doesn't impact him, but. it impacts regular people. And so he. needs to launch a culture war so that. you all don't realize that he's. you over with this move. Do not be. fooled. This is about one man lying to. hundreds of millions of Americans. because while we all need healthcare, he.
doesn't. Per usual, Trump is pretending. that he's looking out for everyone when. in reality he is only looking out for. himself. [Music].
