From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World. News Tonight with David Muir.

Good evening, it is great to have you with us here on. a very busy Monday night. We begin tonight with the breaking news. ABC News obtaining recorded phone calls in. the Cornell investigation. The former student known as Jane Doe recording calls with two. former fraternity members who were both there that night. The calls just three weeks after the alleged attack. What she asks them on the phone and you will. hear what they tell her. Aaron Katersky leading us off tonight. Tonight newly obtained phone calls Jane Doe recorded with. some of the fraternity brothers After she would accuse of rape.

appear to show the men tried to contain the fallout and shape. the narrative three weeks after the alleged assault. Jane Doe tells sophomore Winston Lee she's trying to. piece everything together. "I was like deeply, deeply intoxicated. At some point I said yes to ketamine.". I'm so sorry about all like the backlash you're. getting from this. I feel so bad for you, dude. I actually, like right afterwards, they told me not to. message you because they thought.

But Jane Doe presses him. I was completely and totally intoxicated, and then given. multiple sedatives, and then I was surrounded by. upwards of eight to 10 men. This is classified as a gang rape. That's when Lee's tone appears to change. Jane Doe tells him, I was blacked out for half of it. How did all these people get in there? Lee doesn't mention he was enthusiastic on this. Snapchat thread where more than 50 fraternity.

brothers were invited to the room. There was nothing saying that, like, anything was happening. in that room or anything. Jane Doe then calls Matthew Ingalls, the frat brother she. went to see that night at the Chi Phi house where. it all unfolded. You want me to give my recollection of. the entire night? She asks him how all the men ended up in the bedroom. The party was sort of like crowded. So people started like filling up the balcony just because. there was nowhere else to go.

Ingalls also doesn't mention he sent that group chat a photo. of Jane Doe from the bedroom, writing, "Boys, come whip it out.". Jane Doe tells him when she arrived at the house that night, "You already knew I was 10 shots deep.". But Engels with a different memory. You did tell me you were sober, by the way. You did. You said you hadn't been anywhere. But Jane Doe pushes back, saying she was 100 percent sure. she had told him she had been at a bar for a sorority event. And I never lie. Then asking how they ended up in a threesome with. another frat brother.

So you come in, say hi. We start dancing for like maybe three or five minutes. And then I pop the question. You say yes, then I remember like we didn't. know who else to bring. So I go to who was on the dance floor, too. And I got the question and he's like, yeah, and then we go upstairs. And when Jane Doe asks for his help identifying all. the men she saw in the room, Engle seemed to suggest. both of their memories might not be accurate.

I have racked my brain for this mystery. You know, it's possible that both of us like remember. this and it's not true. All seven fraternity brothers deny any wrongdoing. Lee told campus investigators Jane Doe gave consent. and Ingalls suggested Jane Doe assaulted him. Ingalls was one of two frat brothers expelled. Lee was one of two suspended. A Cornell police officer informing him he could no. longer access the campus. Take a look at that.

Anger over Cornell's handling of the allegations. turning violent. Vandals smashing the glass doors of the administration. building and sending a message in spray paint. saying in part, "Rapists are protected.". And tonight, a protest on campus. David, the case is now in the hands of the state attorney. general's office, which has already reached out to. Jane Doe's attorney. David? All right, Aaron Katersky. leading us off here tonight. Aaron, thank you.

We turn now to the alarming report out of. Russia tonight that has American authorities. watching very closely. A young lab researcher dying from what Russian officials. are calling pneumonia of an unknown origin. Speculation growing tonight, she died from a suspected. case of the plague. Several hospitals under quarantine and we reached out. to Dr. Jha today what he says about all of this. Tonight the US closely tracking a fatal case of suspected. pneumonic plague linked to a research facility in Russia, triggering speculation and fear.

Russian officials say a young lab worker at an institute. in Siberia died three days ago after she was diagnosed with. pneumonia of an unknown cause. Local media identifying that young woman as. 28-year-old Darya Shpilova. Tonight President Trump vowing to help, calling it. a big problem for Russia. Russian officials denying reports of an accident. at the lab, claiming the situation is stable. and there are no other infections. ABC News has confirmed at least three hospitals in the.

region are under quarantine. 200 people also reportedly under observation. Pneumonic plague, caused by the same bacteria as bubonic. plague, is more serious because it can spread through. airborne droplets from sneezing or coughing. It's treated with antibiotics if caught early. Tonight, experts say Russia needs to be open about what. was happening in the lab. Pneumonic plague is rare and generally doesn't spread well. So if it turns out just to be that, it will not end up. becoming a major problem. But we know, given Russia's history of biological.

weapons development, that this could be something. else. And we just need a lot. more information and transparency from the. Russian government about what else it could be. David, travel between the U.S. and Russia is already very limited, with no direct commercial flights. Tonight, the CDC says the safety of U.S. citizens is the highest priority. Elizabeth Schulze tonight, and we thank Dr. Jha for. making sense of it all. Thank you both. Now to the Pentagon's urgent move, at least a dozen B-1 bombers brought back to the US. from that base in the UK where several suspects.

were arrested. Tonight, President Trump says there was a threat. So what has US authorities most concerned? Here's Martha Raddatz with what she's learned. - Tonight, growing questions about the redeployment. of at least a dozen American B-1 bombers. used for vital missions in Iran from a base in the. UK back to the US. President Trump telling reporters a new threat. forced the removal of those warplanes from. RAF Fairford on Sunday without offering specifics.

There were some threats and rather than attempting. the enemy, we'll capture the enemy and beat. the enemy, but why should we leave them there? The New York Times reporting those warplanes were moved. because the unspecified threat was against the base itself. The withdrawal so urgent some bombers left before. refueling planes were ready. Earlier today, Secretary of State Marco Rubio. initially downplayed the move, instead saying. this was a planned mission.

It's not unusual to see rotations happen and. movement of assets to different parts of the. But again tonight, President Trump acknowledging the threat. U.S. authorities reportedly becoming increasingly. concerned about Iranian drones hitting U.S. military installations. The departure of those bombers comes one week after several. British nationals were arrested.

David, we know this was a new and different threat that led. to the removal of our warplanes from the UK. The Wall Street Journal reporting tonight the concern of. a complex drone attack ordered by Iran's IRGC is what prompted. it and concerns remain for other European bases as well. David? All right, Martha Raddatz. with late reporting here. Martha, thank you. Tonight, what ABC News has now learned about that copilot who.

attacked that pilot mid-flight, what he allegedly. planned before. Again tonight, Tom Sufi-Burrige. Tonight, we're learning the copilot who attempted. to hijack and crash a packed plane bound for. Israel originally planned to carry out his. attack on a different flight. Israeli sources Telegram ABC News that suspect. 29 year old Hamam El Hamami seen here in an image from. a now deleted LinkedIn profile had operated a flight to. Tel Aviv in July and intended to crash that plane but aborted.

his plan. Sources say it's not clear why he changed. David, the mystery widens as sources now believe. the suspect was flying a different plane weeks.

And she may have surveilled other families as well. She is accused of being an unregistered. agent of a foreign government, and she's still. locked up awaiting trial.

David. Trevor Ault reporting. from Los Angeles. Trevor, thank you. Tonight, a British Airways flight bound. for Chicago, flying from London, declaring an emergency. The plane losing pressurization about 30. minutes into the flight, oxygen masks dropping from. overhead. The pilot rapidly descending 28,000 feet. in about seven minutes or so before dumping fuel. And returning to London's Heathrow Airport. No word on what caused this. Passengers have been put on a flight for tomorrow. Tonight in a very rare move, the NFL has now suspended two. referees after two separate games on Sunday.

Here's Rhiannon Ally with the reason why. Tonight the extremely rare move taken by the NFL to punish. two referees after separate confrontations with players on. the field during game Sunday. He was -- he was larger than life. And how am I ever going to be the man my father is? A child of Russian immigrants, Kirk Douglas grew up in. abject poverty in a rough home and a volatile dad to his. scrawny little boy Michael. He meant well, but he was out of that generation where he. smacked around a fair amount. He writes that as a boy he was often in tears amid. the anger in that home.
