We begin tonight with President Trump stuck on the tarmac, delayed on his trip to the first ever. Republican midterm convention in Dallas. The emergency slide deploying on the new Air Force. won the $400 million gift from Qatar. The slide visible from under the plane there, the. president was asked if the plane was safe to fly. President Trump in Dallas tonight trying to build. support for Republican candidates in the midterms, with voters concerned about gas prices, grocery.

prices, and the war in Iran. ABC's Rachel Scott leading us off tonight. Tonight, President Trump taking center stage at the first ever. Republican midterm convention, An unprecedented effort to rally. voters before the midterms. Welcome to the first ever midterm convention of any party. The day didn't start smoothly. The president's flight delayed after an emergency slide. on the new Air Force One. That $400 million gift from Qatar inflated and deployed.

ABC's Mary Bruce there watching it all. The president is still right there behind me. on Marine One has been there for about 15 minutes and just. moments ago this happened. Can you see that? It's a slide, one of those inflatable slides. that was deployed from the opposite side of the plane. Mary then spotting the old Air Force One pulling up behind the. cutter gifted jet, a possible backup. The president with this explanation. They were doing a check on the slide, you know, on the emergency. But sources later telling ABC News,

military personnel accidentally triggered the slide. Are you sure this plane is safe to fly? Yeah, I am, or I wouldn't be on it. The president eventually boarding the Qatari-gifted jet. and taking off for Dallas. Tonight, with President Trump's approval rating. at a record low 33%, some Republicans in tough. races skipping the convention. The president knows the war with Iran, now in its seventh. month, is deeply unpopular, now offering yet another timeline for. when it will all end.

I think the war will end immediately after the election. Why? Because they can't. hold out any longer. He insists the price of gas, now at $4.26 a gallon, will. plunge, but not before the midterms. Right after the election, oil prices are going. to be tumbling downward. They're going to be tumbling down and we'll get them down. I think for gasoline, we'll get them below $2 a gallon. But not until after the midterm. I think it's going to take a little bit. longer than the midterm. And David, President Trump will be delivering the keynote.

address here in Dallas tonight. He will be speaking tomorrow night as well. But Republicans are calling this a Trumppalooza. Still, some Republicans in competitive races are skipping. this convention entirely with less than 55 days to go. until the midterm election. David, they are nearing for sure. Rachel Scott leading us off tonight. Rachel, thanks. Tonight, the race to save homes teetering on the edge. in Southern California. Emergency evacuations underway. Monster waves damaging homes there. Multiple homes now red tag tonight, ruled unsafe to enter.

And a massive sinkhole under the home of actor Nicolas Cage. ABC's Trevor Ault in California tonight. Tonight, the race to save multiple beachfront. Southern California homes destroyed by pounding surf. Oh! Relentless waves pushing debris. ashore south of L.A., workers scrambling in a futile effort. to shore up what they can. This house, we're trying to save it, but it's. not going to happen. The back deck at the home of former Dodger Adrian Beltre.

crashing into the ocean below. At least one home in Capistrano Beach had to be demolished, others red-tagged as unsafe. By the time we got here this morning, the whole. master bedroom, the kitchen was all in the ocean. And in Malibu, a sinkhole opening up under this home. belonging to actor Nicolas Cage. Authorities there declaring a state of emergency. There are all kinds of cement mixers. and other construction equipment. There's a couple more cement mixers even down here. That's how much it's taking to stabilize this sinkhole.

It keeps expanding and more than 30 homes. are under evacuation orders. All those dangerous waves were brought on. by remnants of Hurricane Marie and Hawaii is still reeling. from Hurricane Lowell, Arcana-Witworth in Kauai. Damage assessments have really just begun. You can see what's left of people's belongings. here just thrown into what used to be a street. by that storm surge. And now this is all just covered with mud and debris. Crews now repairing and inspecting some 1,500. miles of power lines.

And it could be weeks before all of it is restored. And David, all this is happening is Los Angeles is battling. extreme heat and humidity. Downtown LA felt like 111 degrees today. And if people try to cool off in the ocean, we're also dealing. with rip current advisories. Also a very real concern, Trevor Alt tonight. Trevor, thanks. There's new and harrowing video out tonight of that deadly. plane crash in Miami, the jet plowing off the runway, where. the pilots trying to abort the landing in those final seconds. Tonight chilling video showing the final seconds of that Amazon. cargo plane plowing off the. The NTSB released details from the cockpit voice recorder,

what the pilots were saying in the critical moments. before the crash. Investigators say a little more than a minute before the plane. touched down on the runway, one pilot warned they were going. too fast, and made additional comments regarding the. aircraft's excessive speed throughout the. remainder of the recording. Speed is the operative element in this, and the airplane was. going so fast and was unable to get both main gear actually. rolling on the runway. Investigators say just 15 seconds before the crash,

a pilot called to abort the landing and throttle. up, but it was too late. Tonight, the family of Yoel Rodriguez-Naranjo, one. of the five men killed, filing the first lawsuit. claiming the disaster was not an unavoidable accident. The husband and father had just wrapped up his shift and. was driving the cleaning crew van that was struck. David, investigators are working through all the evidence, seeing data from the black boxes show a critical braking. system was not deployed. And the pilots appeared to try aborting the landing,

A researcher at Anthropic, the company behind Claude, quitting the AI industry and now warning that AI. could, quote, kill us all by the end of the decade. and why others are now voicing concern, too. Here's Matt Rivers tonight. Tonight, an industry insider issuing a dire warning. about the potential dangers of AI, accusing. the company's building advanced AI models of putting.

humanity at risk in their race to develop the technology. AI researcher Jacob Coxon resigning from his position at. Anthropic, the maker of Claude, writing in a statement, "The. people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us. all by the end of the decade. No other human activity poses this level of danger.". The alarm comes after Anthropic and fellow AI giant OpenAI. disclosed separate incidents earlier this year, in which. some of their AI models chose to gain unauthorized access.

to the Internet and then hacked other organizations. Anthropic's CEO recently telling our Lindsay Davis the. government should play a role in overseeing safe AI development. Where is the responsibility to make sure that you're creating. a safe product that doesn't create a worst case scenario? Yeah, I mean, I think we're building it. The onus is on us, right? I think the government has a role in setting standards, in helping us identify and track down threats.

David Anthropic did not respond to our request for comment, but today a top safety researcher at the company. posting he agrees that AI could kill all humans. and puts it at a greater than 10% chance. that that happens within the next decade. David? These warnings are. alarming for sure. Matt Rivers on this tonight. Thank you, Matt. Tonight, a harrowing chase unfolding. on the streets of Dayton, Ohio. Seven police officers have been hurt, a suspect stealing. a police cruiser and slamming it into a home.

Two people then pulled from that home. And here's Morgan Norwood. Tonight, you're watching a dramatic end to a. wild high speed chase. Behind the wheel of this police cruiser is not a. Dayton officer, but a suspect. who stole that vehicle after police say he crashed his. own car in a neighborhood following a long pursuit. The suspect, seen speeding through the scene of. a crash on Thursday, knocks down a street sign, the. SUV badly damaged, officers performing a pit maneuver.

The driver now on foot sprinting through a backyard, police losing sight of him. Officers finally spotting the suspect as he. entered that police car. The car racing from the scene, driving straight into this home. And David, seven officers and two people inside that home were. injured. Police say they later found out that suspect. was wanted in connection to a homicide and other.

violent crimes nearby. David. All right, Morgan Norwood. reporting tonight. Morgan, thank you. Just in tonight, the ABC News exclusive, Aaron. Katersky one-on-one with one of the jurors in. the Lindsay Clancy murder trial outside Boston. 25-year-old Nick Dargy and what he now reveals about what played. out in that jury room with the lone holdout juror and the. note they sent to the judge saying they were deadlocked. Let's get right to Aaron Katersky who just. finished up the interview. Aaron, what did you learn? -David, Nick Dargy was one of three men on the jury. that deadlocked in the trial of Lindsay Clancy.

He was serving in the military and overseas. when Clancy killed her children, so he came into the case cold, not knowing anything about it, then had to sit through. that harrowing trial. And about that holdout juror, he told us he never got. an explanation as to why he refused to budge. from his position. Take me inside the deliberation room. There was several times I would ask him to show us evidence. or describe a witness testimony that helped to prove what he.

was saying, and he couldn't. There wasn't a single piece of evidence or witness testimony. that he used to prove why he was thinking the way. he was, which is why we ultimately sent in that note. Otherwise, like, there's nothing wrong with somebody having a. completely opposite opinion. Like, that's, you know, that would be a hung jury. That is our justice system. After the trial, when Nick turned on his phone. and became aware of just how divided the country.

Tonight, police in St. Paul, Minnesota, are crediting their. drone with the rescue of a child who had wandered into a pond.

The emergency drone was deployed immediately after. the 911 call came in. That drone arriving two minutes ahead of police, then showing authorities the child's exact location. The family says the child has autism and had wandered away. from home without their knowing. They say that drone made the reaction time much quicker. There was a deadly plane crash at San Diego's Montgomery. Gibbs Executive Airport. Two people were killed. Workers at a nearby hangar heard a loud boom and ran. out to see the Cessna fully engulfed. A preliminary report tonight says the plane. had been attempting to land and appeared to stall.

Its left wing dipped and then. it spun to the ground. The two people on board did not survive a dramatic. rescue in Brooklyn. An off duty NYPD officer surveillance showing a car. drifting through a red light. The off-duty officer parked across the street, seeing a driver who appeared to be unconscious, running over, jumping through the window, opening the door. and pulling the driver onto the street, immediately doing. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, pointing to several intense heat waves and. widespread unseasonably warm temperatures. Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah experienced. their warmest summer since record keeping began in 1895. August was also the driest month in more than 25 years.
