And we do begin with that breaking news, the new details. on the investigation into that deadly cargo plane crash at. Miami International Airport. At least five people killed, five others. injured, some critically. The dramatic new video coming in tonight showing the moment of. the crash, flames shooting from that plane, black.

smoke filling the sky. Late today authorities revealing the plane overshot the. runway by 1,300 feet, slamming into two vehicles, killing. several people inside. Officials describing the scene as devastating. Hundreds of flights delayed or canceled. And the news just coming in tonight of another. plane crash in the Bahamas. We'll have more on that in just a moment. But first, ABC's Victor Oquendo leads us off. from the scene in Miami. Tonight, the NTSB investigating why this Amazon cargo jet.

overshot the runway in Miami by 1300 feet flames. shooting from an engine as it slammed into a van. with a cleaning crew on board and another car. killing five people and seriously injuring five more. I would describe it in one word of devastating. Utter devastation. Planes on fire, planes on fire. Put your game faces on. Hundreds of first responders racing to the scene. and straight to the cockpit to rescue the two pilots.

as firefighters douse the rear of the plane. Teams freeing one person who was trapped under a vehicle. Rescue! Tonight, the NTSB says they are still recovering the victims. The recovery of victims is most important. The investigation and access to the aircraft as. well as evidence can wait. It was just before 2 p.m. yesterday when the plane from Puerto Rico was.

coming in for a landing. Preliminary flight data showing it was traveling. at 128 miles an hour. One of the key elements in here is going to be the speed. at which they approached the runway, apparently almost 190. miles an hour, and the speed at which they rocketed off the. other end, 128 miles an hour. That's a tremendous amount of energy for a. 300,000-pound airplane. Miami International Airport does not use EMAS. It's a system of lightweight, crushable material at the end.

of a runway to stop planes. This video shows that system at work in Boca. Raton, stopping this small plane from overshooting. the runway. At least 70 airports nationwide have installed that safety. system, and the FAA credits it with saving nearly 500 lives. Whether that would have helped prevent this tragedy and. should the E-Mass be everywhere at every airport, that will be. a key part of our investigation. Rachel, the NTSB has recovered the flight data recorder and. the cockpit voice recorder.

They will be sent to D.C. for analysis. Tonight, two of the four runways here at Miami. International Airport are closed, delays averaging. five hours. Rachel? Yes, and some major questions. about how this all happened. Victor, you're tracking the other breaking news tonight. Word of a plane crash in the Bahamas. Rachel, we've learned that the Coast Guard. is assisting Bahamian authorities after a plane. carrying four people crashed off Andros Island. Americans are believed to be on board. That is according to a source familiar with the situation.

Yeah, it would be the second plane crash. there in recent months. Okay, Victor, thank you. We turn now to the state of emergency in Hawaii as Hurricane. Lowell churns in the Pacific. The islands are bracing for the worst as some areas. are already dealing with flooding and heavy rain. And over in Long Beach, California, another storm. is unleashing monster waves flooding and high surf. ABC's Kana Whitworth is tracking it all from Hawaii tonight. Tonight, the state of emergency in Hawaii, Hurricane Lowell. bringing flooding and torrential rain to the island chain.

This farm on Oahu inundated, but it's Kauai County. under a hurricane warning that will take the brunt. We're still hours away from the worst of it and they're already. having massive downed trees like this on roads throughout Kauai. Up to 16 inches of rain possible in some areas and historic. surf reaching 20 to 30 feet is expected in the coming hours. Have you ever seen surf that high in your time on the island? being surfed that high, not on our southern shores. - Schools shutting down, residents urged to stay off. the roads and conserve water.

And in California, millions along the coast. seeing the impacts of Tropical Storm Marie. It's hundreds of miles off the coast, but still bringing monster waves, slamming the community, flooding neighborhoods. from Ventura to San Diego County. - We've never seen it where the ocean. destroyed the berm completely. When we saw that, we were like shocked. Yeah, Rachel, you can see behind me that surf is. really starting to churn up. They could potentially see historically high. surf here on Kauai, and the mayor has said.

this storm is officially too close for comfort. He is asking people to move inside before the worst of. it rolls in later tonight. Rachel? Yeah, we see those waves. crashing behind you. Okay, Kena, thank you. So let's get right to meteorologist Jeff Smith from. our New York station, WABC. Jeff, time these storms out for us. Yeah, and the brunt of this hurricane will be coming mighty. close to the western portions of the Hawaiian Islands. by later on tonight, Kauai in particular. Let's time it out for you and show you what these. impacts are going to be. The brunt of it, the peak strength of this,

probably right around midnight tonight, Hawaiian. We're talking about winds gusting above 70. miles per hour over the western Hawaiian Islands, maybe tropical storm force gusts around Honolulu. The surf is going to be monstrous, up to 30 feet in some. cases, and rainfall will be big as well. Up to 16 inches on Kauai, parts of the Big Island. 4 to 8 inches. Meanwhile, Big Surf heading toward. the Southern California coastline with offshore and. weakening tropical storm Marie. Luckily for the rest of the country, things. quieting down as we head home from the Labor Day weekend. Rachel. Okay, Jeff, we'll take it.

Thank you. Now to the Labor Day travel rush. Millions of Americans heading home today after. the long holiday weekend. Those hitting the roads are facing record. prices at the pump. The average price for a gallon of gas now soaring above $4. Here's ABC's Gio Benitez. Tonight as millions travel home after the long holiday. weekend, drivers facing record high Labor Day gas prices, the national average for regular unleaded is. now at $4.15 a gallon, up nearly a dollar from. a year ago, driven higher by the war with Iran. I think it is totally ridiculous.

Gas prices is outrageous. And with the holiday coming. around, a lot of people can't live the life that they want. The TSA, meanwhile, expects more than 2.5 million people. to fly today. Airports around the country are urging domestic. passengers to arrive at least two hours before the flight, allowing extra time for parking, drop-offs and pickups. We were lucky, honestly, that our connecting. flight was delayed. Otherwise, we would have But higher gas prices and long. lines at security checkpoints aren't the only headaches.

for people heading home. On an American Airlines flight from Dallas to. Newark, a passenger became so disruptive he ended. up duct taped to his seat. Crews say the unusual restraint was necessary to keep him. from causing more trouble as other passengers looked on. And Rachel, at airports it's been a pretty good day with very. few cancellations and delays, But on the road, some cities. will see heavier traffic throughout the night. Rachel. Okay, Gio, thank you. And tomorrow, Americans are set to face even higher prices as. Canada's retaliatory tariffs kick in.

It will impact hundreds of American products, everything. from steel to cheese. It comes as the trade war between the U.S. and Canada escalates. Here's ABC's Jay O'Brien. Tonight President Trump returning to Washington. as his bitter trade war with Canada ratchets. up more than $27 billion of Canadian tariffs on American. goods set to snap into place at midnight covering over. 700 different products, everything from steel. to aluminum to cheese. The Canadian tariffs retaliation for 50% tariffs President.

Trump announced this summer on a wide range of Canadian imports. estimated to cost the typical American household nearly. $1,100 when combined with Trump's other tariffs. The president today raising the stakes, warning he may prohibit. Canadian jet manufacturer Bombardier from selling in. the United States unless they "build here" and stop treating. America like a piggy bank. And in a Labor Day message, Canadian Prime Minister Mark. Carney promising to put economic distance between his country.

and the U.S., writing, "Canada is growing stronger and less. It's dependent on any single partner. We are already giving ourselves far more than. anyone can take away. You're at war when you get attacked. We got attacked. After last-ditch trade talks between the U.S. and its second-largest trading partner collapsed. last month, no new negotiations are scheduled. They came in with a bunch of unreasonable. last-minute demands. It comes as Trump tries to ramp up economic and military. pressure overseas on Iran. The U.S. striking three Iranian oil tankers over the weekend.

in response to Iranian missiles launched at U.S. Navy vessels, including an aircraft carrier. Another headline tonight, Rachel. Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Whitkoff, saying he and. the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, made "substantive. progress" in separate peace talks this weekend with. Now to that chilling incident in Ohio. Police say an armed man lunged at the Democratic nominee for.

governor during an appearance on Sunday. State police say they recovered two handguns and brass. knuckles after his arrest. Here's ABC's Matt Rivers. Just 24 hours after police say an armed man lunged at Ohio. gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton during a campaign event. Hi, Cleveland. Tonight she's speaking out. I am so thankful to our first responders and our state. highway patrol and everyone who helped out the people. who were injured.

Police say 38-year-old Patrick Havas pushed through. the crowd toward Acton. Acton's security detail confronted him, Havas. shoving two people to the ground in the process. We say Chavez was armed with two handguns and a set of. brass knuckles, though he made clear he never brandished those. weapons, the weapons "legal to carry" under Ohio law. Acton then seen trying to help one of the victims. Acton's opponent, former Republican presidential. candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, condemning the. attack. Political violence has no. place in America, period.

Full stop. It comes as cases of political violence are on the rise, from the attack at the White House Correspondents'. Dinner to last year's killing of Democratic. lawmakers in Minnesota, it has many on edge in the. lead up to this year's high stakes midterm elections. Rachel, the suspect in this case is charged with one count. of disorderly conduct and two counts of assault. Matt, thank you. We turn now to the Illinois mother charged with the murder. of her two-year-old son. Witnesses told police that she was very invested in.

the trial of Lindsay Clancy. According to court documents, she was actively discussing. the case in a text message hours before the alleged. murder was discovered. Here's ABC's Aaron Katersky. Tonight, the case against this Illinois mother. accused of the unthinkable is chillingly similar to. the Lindsay Clancy trial that captivated the country. While her husband was out of state, police say Cori Walsh. hanged her two-year-old son from a rafter in the basement. of the family home in Frankfurt and then began stabbing.

herself in an upstairs bathtub. Court records said Walsh told police she did this to her. baby because he was the devil. Her attorney said she was having a psychotic episode. Witnesses told police Walsh had recently become very invested. in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial which ended with. the jury deadlocked. The jury is deadlocked and I'm going to declare a mistrial. Tonight prosecutors are deciding whether to retry Clancy for. killing her three children. Children were murdered and it's our job to seek justice.

If she's tried again, her attorney is confident. Clancy would convince a new jury she cannot. Next tonight, we are hearing from a Southern California. man who confronted a violent customer allegedly threatening. workers at an In-N-Out burger.

The former gymnast says he did not think twice. before jumping into action. Here's ABC's Melissa Dahn. Tonight, the dramatic moment a 20-year-old college student. jumps into a drive-through window to protect fast. food employees from a violent customer. My body was like, you got to get through that. drive-through window. Luca Opperman was waiting in the drive-through of. an In-N-Out burger in Lake Elsinore, California, when he says he heard loud yelling inside the restaurant. And he's banging on the counter with this. baseball bat-sized stick.

The quick-thinking athlete grabbed a spatula. and confronted 53-year-old Antoinette Sanchez, who was allegedly angry about her food. Opperman tackled the woman after she swung the stick, taking it away from her. Just doing what I can, you know, standing up. for Gen Z, you know? Someone's got to put in the work. Just last month, a 24-year-old man opened fire in a Twin. Falls, Idaho, In-N-Out burger, killing three and. wounding seven. Police arrived on scene and arrested the woman.

Now, Luca tells us that In-N-Out has reached out to him, and he's thankful for their support. Rachel? Most of thank you.
