News Tonight with David Muir. Good evening, I'm Witt Johnson and for David tonight we. begin with breaking news. A dramatic day in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial in. Plymouth, Massachusetts. Late today in an animated exchange with the jury.

still deadlocked six days into deliberations, the defense asking the judge to remove one of the jurors. with a potential mistrial at stake. The jury foreperson saying one juror won't follow the judge's. instructions about reasonable doubt. ABC's chief investigative correspondent, Aaron Katersky, at the courthouse tonight. Tonight nearly 36 hours into deliberations, Lindsay Clancy's. defense attorney suggested a lone juror is all that stands. between the Massachusetts mother who killed her three.

Children and a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. There's a person who has doubt but will not listen. to the judge's instruction. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington claims one juror. is refusing to follow the law that says a defendant. must be proved guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, leaving the jury of nine women and three. men deadlocked for days. And if we come back here in a half an hour with. a mistrial because of a Because of a juror that has. just spurned the instructions of this court, it's a shame. It's a real shame.

Reddington demanded the juror be dismissed and an alternate. seated, but the judge refused. I don't feel it's appropriate for me to say I agree. with one juror or the 11. Removing a juror is very unusual. So just because a juror does not agree with the majority of. the jurors, or has a different view of the facts of the. majority of the jurors, or is not willing to. no longer deliberate with the other jurors, that alone is not grounds to remove that juror. The tension playing out in a packed, hushed courtroom on.

the sixth day of deliberations to decide whether Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, can be. held criminally responsible.

Aaron Katersky, joining us now from the courthouse. outside the courthouse. from the courthouse outside Boston and Aaron, some heated. moments in court today. So what can we expect tomorrow when the jury returns? The judge is expected to question that one holdout. juror, Witt, before the jury begins deliberations. for a seventh day tomorrow. The concern is the one holdout could cause a. mistrial and force this whole emotional gut-wrenching.

case to be replayed. And so many across the country waiting to see how this. plays out. Aaron Katersky for us. We appreciate it. Also developing tonight, tornado warnings and severe. thunderstorms at this hour. More than 50 million in the path from Chicago to Detroit, Washington D.C. to Philadelphia. Possible tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail. The powerful system unleashing torrential rain, storms. threatening to upend what is expected to be a record. holiday travel weekend. Tonight, hundreds of thousands without power in the Midwest.

Here's ABC's senior meteorologist, Lee Goldberg. Tonight, multiple tornado warnings with severe. storms slamming millions in the Midwest and. Northeast. Flooding highways just as a. holiday travel rush begins. Hundreds of thousands without power across Michigan. It was just raining so hard. You could not see out the windows. In Detroit, powerful thunderstorms toppling this. massive tree onto a home. The family inside escaping unharmed. I heard another kaboom, and then that's when we seen the.

walls of our bedroom collapse. You can hear it! Outside Buffalo, this transformer exploding, sparking a fire. Home surveillance video capturing the moment a sudden. gust of wind and torrential rain sent debris flying. Thousands of flights delayed or canceled, the majority in. New York's JFK and LaGuardia. That same storm system pounding Toronto. This popular concert venue severely damaged. And tonight, flash flood warnings in southeast Texas. Two feet of rain swamping homes as the remnants of.

Tropical Storm Edouard continue to hammer the region. So let's get right to Lee Goldberg. Lee, these storms are on the move tonight and right. into the busy Labor Day weekend. Indeed, we just had a tornado warning near Cleveland. that was just dropped. They're still under severe thunderstorm warnings. Detroit had a tornado warning early in the evening. We'll cover these lines of severe storms. They'll move across the Great Lakes, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The watch is in effect until midnight, impacting. places like Cleveland and Pittsburgh getting. blasted right now.

More severe storms. Same places for the holiday travel. rush tomorrow. Pittsburgh D. C. Into much of Virginia and that storm zone. that'll ship farther south into the Carolinas into. Saturday. To southeast Texas, a flood watch still. in effect through seven o'clock. Now the heaviest range of the remnants. of a Dwarf finally are breaking apart, but any. additional downpours can still cause some flooding. And finally, it's the comfort moving into. the Great Lakes and northeast, more comfortable. temperatures for the holiday weekend. But the heat dome is intact across. parts of the Midwest and the deep south. All right, Lee, thank you for that.

Next tonight, chilling video of a deadly mass. shooting in Minneapolis. Police officers seen rushing into a building. as shots are fired. Two people killed, five wounded, including two officers. What authorities are now saying about the alleged gunman. Here's ABC's Pierre Thomas. Tonight, harrowing new video capturing the moment. police confronted a gunman inside this apartment. building in Minneapolis. Officers seen rushing residents from the building, carrying the. wounded to safety, as bullets flew.

Gunshots and screaming erupting just minutes earlier, sending. neighbors running for cover, and officers racing. toward the building. I heard cursing, and then I just heard shot, shot, shot, shot. Police say the man believed to be the suspect, 35-year-old. Carlton Johnson, first opened fire outside his apartment. building during a child custody exchange. The mother of his child shot in the leg, but. the child escaping unharmed. We were getting a report of an officer down on the ninth floor.

Authorities say he went inside, shot two building workers, one. at close range, before going up to the ninth floor, where. he killed two people, and all seven people were shot. There was an exchange of gunfire at that time. The suspect died, and two officers were shot. Residents describing the chaos. -There was blood on the entry on the main lobby. There was a lady laying in a puddle of blood. -Court records obtained by KSTP show Johnson. was just days away from an eviction hearing.

after his landlord claimed he assaulted someone, made threats, and brandished a gun with it. -And, Pierre, while we have you, there's. another headline tonight about an ICE-related shooting. in Minneapolis back in January. Yeah, sources tell us an ICE agent who has been suspended. in the shooting of a Venezuelan man has been charged by DOJ. with lying about the incident. Christian Castro had claimed that he was attacked. during the shooting, but ICE later said that. video evidence contradicted the agent's story.

Pierre Thomas, those breaking developments. Thank you. Now to the harrowing scene inside a police. department in Florida. Authorities say a 70-year-old woman opening fire in the lobby, officers ducking for cover. ABC's Matt Rivers with how this ended. Tonight dramatic video of the rapid police response. Officers racing for cover, guns drawn, saying an active. shooter at their police station. It all played out in Port Orange, Florida.

An authority say the suspect is a senior citizen, now identified. as Linda Jean Croteau. That person was a 70, roughly 70-year-old white female. Police say Croteau walked into the police department lobby. with a handgun this morning and opened fire, staff taking cover. No one was hurt. Then outside, she was met by a half dozen officers. She was still holding a firearm when she was. confronted by the officers. Police say three officers opened fire, seriously wounding her. She was taken to the hospital where she remains.

in critical condition. By the time she dropped it, she walked to the curb. She sat down, put her hands on her head and pretty. much gave up at that point. And then after that, nothing but gunshots firing her way. With Florida state authorities are now. leading the investigation. With Matt Rivers for us. Thank you. Now to the war in Iran entering a seventh month. Despite the U.S. launching attacks on Iranian targets this. week and Iran retaliating, Vice President J.D. Vance today pressed on whether.

the war will be over by the midterm elections. Vance saying he "wouldn't call it a war.". Here's ABC's Mary Bruce. More than six months into what the president said would be. a four to six week conflict And with attacks escalating, Vice President J.D. Vance took to the podium at the White. House today and said he wouldn't call it a war. I wouldn't call it a war. Right now there is no active shooting. I recognize there have been places where this has flared up.

Pressed on when this will end and whether it will be over. by the midterms, the vice President said it's up to Iran. that the U.S. won't negotiate until Iran stops striking. You'd have to ask the Iranians, when will the. Iranians shooting at ships stop having an effect. on world energy markets? But he did not outline any concrete plan for how the U.S. intends to stop these attacks. Resources stretched thin with long deployments. The 82nd Airborne learning their deployment is being.

extended, lasting a full year. And tonight, a growing number of Republicans openly questioning. whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is fit for the job. With Hegseth purging top military officials, Republican Tom Tillis, who cast a critical vote. to confirm Hegseth, now says Trump should fire him, saying, "I have never witnessed more inept management of. the brave men and women who serve our country," adding, "He. is intimidated by competence.". The White House tonight is standing by Hagseth and Commerce.

Secretary Howard Lutnick, who now says he misspoke when he. falsely said there haven't been American deaths in Iran. Lutnick says he was thinking of the operation in Venezuela. and acknowledges the 18 U.S. Service members who have died and he is apologizing. Mary Bruce at the White House. Thank you. The Trump administration making an urgent appeal to the Supreme. Court to allow new Postal Service rules for. mail-in ballots to take effect immediately. The rules stem from President Trump's executive order aimed.

at restricting access to voting by mail. A federal judge temporarily blocking the changes. The administration wants to require states to. provide additional information when mailing. ballots through the Postal Service. Critics say the rules infringe on the state's. authority to run elections. Tonight tributes pouring in following the passing of Gloria. Steinem, a fearless advocate, best-selling author, and. leading architect of the modern feminist movement. She spent more than half a century breaking. barriers, expanding opportunities for women.

Because, you know, I live in the future and. I live in the present. I don't live in the past. But I feel lucky. I feel angry. I feel all the emotions of life about what's come before. The only thing I regret is wasting time. And with tonight, her foundation saying Gloria Steinem died.

last October. Tonight, Sanchez's lawyer says that he is finalizing an. agreement with the prosecutor's and having constructive. conversations towards settling a civil case. brought by the driver. Now to the deadly accident in a Trader Joe's parking. lot in Los Angeles. Four pedestrians were struck by a car, one fatally, outside Trader Joe's in L.A.'s Fairfax District. The Tesla coming to a stop after slamming into a security kiosk. Law enforcement officials say the driver, an elderly.

woman, was also injured. She was not arrested. Next tonight, the drama at LaGuardia Airport this morning. An American Airlines flight forced to abort takeoff after. a suspected bird strike. The Boeing 737 headed to Chicago's O'Hare. Airport was still on the ground and traveling. nearly 140 miles an hour when the pilots called it off. And we do have a bird strike. We're at market 392. Market 392, roger. And that was the reason for you to cancel takeoff?

The FAA issuing a ground stop for a time, but after. inspection, they found no evidence of a bird strike. When we come back here, the SEC is suing LSU over their. plan to bring back NFL rookies to play in college again. The move just as the new season gets underway. To the index now, three youth football coaches are now. facing charges after a massive brawl in the final minutes. of a game outside Pittsburgh. Witnesses say one coach was behaving erratically. before being confronted by the coach from another team.

The coaches fighting on the field, the league ejecting. them and suspending five others from their teams. Well, just as the new football season gets underway, the. Southeastern Conference, the SEC, is suing LSU. over its plan to bring NFL rookies back to play. college football again. LSU has pursued three former college players who had one. year left of eligibility before going to NFL training. camps where they were ultimately let go. The SEC argues LSU's move is unfair and an unauthorized.
