this is World News Tonight with David Muir. Good evening, and it's great to have you with us. here at a very busy Monday night. We begin tonight with the breaking news, the massive outage triggering flight chaos. across the Northeast, hundreds of flights grounded. Airspace over parts of the Northeast shut down for hours. Today, planes halted on the tarmac at airports in. Philadelphia and Newark, New York's LaGuardia. Airport and JFK Airport, too, along with Logan Airport. in Boston, all affected.

Thousands of passengers stuck at the airport. Authorities say the outage was caused by a blown circuit. and then the backup fiber line accidentally cut by a work crew. Air traffic control could not communicate with pilots, forcing ground stops. And what we learned just moments ago on this. Gio Benitez leading us off from Newark tonight. Tonight, the massive outage for air traffic control paralyzing. some of the nation's largest airports in the Northeast, from Philadelphia to New York City to Boston. We saw there was a ground stop due to equipment outage. Do you have any information for us?

Yeah, man, nothing works. Planes parked near runways as ground stops at Newark and. Philadelphia trigger thousands of delays and cancellations. around the U.S. Air traffic controllers at. the regional facility in Philadelphia unable. to monitor or communicate with all planes after. officials say a circuit blew. That facility manages flights into and. out of Philly and Newark International, the FAA ordering. an immediate ground stop. The backup 600-foot fiber line inoperable. and we're learning it was accidentally cut by a New Jersey.

Transit construction crew. That fiber break is probably 13 hours to repair. It's massive. I'm told all data coming through that. circuit was lost. It took hours to fix and replace the broken circuit in Philly. Some of the nation's busiest airports are still. facing massive disruptions getting everything. back on track. Passengers forced to deplane in Boston, long lines stretching. through terminals at Newark. I have to get to Boston today, so I'm getting. ready to go to the train station, taking a sellout.

The ground stops expanding to Washington, D.C. New York City's JFK and LaGuardia impacted too. Nearly a hundred flights diverted, some flights. leaving Europe for the U.S., also turning back. It seems like the whole New York airspace has. been now shut down. We've closed Kennedy and also LaGuardia. The FAA has implemented a ground stop. on all traffic into the New York area. -You can see from Flightradar24, one of the busiest air travel. corridors in the world, empty, planes turned away.

Joan Glass stuck in Savannah for hours, trying to get to Philadelphia. -We were getting ready to board, and now we were told to. go back to our seats. Everybody's being civil, getting a little frustrating. -Today's incident comes just 24 hours. after a separate equipment failure. at New York's Regional Facility Sunday. Flights slowed for several hours, the. FAA now investigating. -And, David, we just learned moments ago. that the line has been fixed. Airports are running again, but it is gonna take some time. to get everything back to normal, David.

-Yeah, all those headaches today. Gio Benitez leading us off here tonight. Gio, thank you. also breaking tonight the ice shooting of a door dash. driver in Austin, Texas. The driver shot and wounded by an ice agent. during a traffic stop. What ice is now saying tonight and what the driver now says, his version of the story, saying he still has. a bullet in his body. Tonight the protests and here's Pierre Thomas. Tonight outrage and a search for answers in Austin, Texas, after ice agents shot a door dash delivery driver. Gunfire caught on camera.

Oh my God. Wilbur Rafael Garces Perez, seen hunched over in the driver's. seat of his Toyota Corolla after being shot by an ICE. agent just before 1 p.m. Sunday. According to a law enforcement. source, agents ran Perez's license plate through a database. and got a positive match on his vehicle, indicating he was facing a final deportation order. And sources say when he tried to flee, he was shot. Perez, who is from Venezuela, seen outside the car in. handcuffs and bleeding.

Protests erupting at the scene. He had a work permit. He was seeking asylum. Perez's lawyer says he came to the country legally, but missed. a court date after a hearing notice was sent. to an old address. Perez himself calling into a news conference. from the ICE detention center where he's being. held, telling reporters through a translator that agents hit. him with their unmarked vehicle and that when he tried to. pull over, he was struck again and then shot. We are fed up with ICE and DHS telling us lies about what.

has happened in these incidents where people are being. murdered and shot. The shooting comes as ICE activity has been. surging nationwide. The agency making more than 50,000 arrests in the months. of July and August alone. Record numbers. Austin's mayor is calling for more transparency from ICE. I think actions like what we saw yesterday and what we've. seen in other cities by ICE don't make people feel safe and. actually decrease their safety.

David, tonight Perez remains in detention facing deportation. And today he told us he's still in pain with a. bullet still in his back. - Pierre Thomas live in Austin for us, Pierre, thank you. In New York City tonight, President Trump standing side by. side with Mayor Zoran Mamdani. The mayor invited all reporters to Gracie Mansion after. the president's ban on some media outlets at. the White House. What the mayor said about it all and what the president. then said about his decision. those banned outlets now suing the Trump administration. Mary Bruce, right here in New York.

Trump defending his decision to ban CNN, MSNOW and Politico. from the White House because he doesn't like. how they cover him.

I never get anything positive. It's always negative. Even having to do with the war, we've done so well. Trump is in New York to attend the UN General Assembly. Television networks traditionally team up to. cover his every move, designating one network. And, of course, there's the president.

In a joint statement, ABC News, CBS, NBC, CNN, and Fox News. saying the public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news. organization because it objects to its reporting. Vice President J.D. Vance, who unlike Trump, did not. impose the ban at his events, tonight defending the. president's decision. Here's Matt Rivers. Tonight, tragedy for supermodel Cindy Crawford and her. husband, Randy Gerber, their only son, Presley Gerber, dying at the age of 27. The death now being investigated as a suspected. overdose, according to Santa Monica police. Sources close to the case telling ABC News Presley Gerber. checked into a high-end rehab center on Saturday. He was found dead by staff the next morning. Presley Gerber started modeling at the age of 15. This is the Pepsi for this model.

Later joining his famous mother for this 2018 Pepsi. Super Bowl commercial. But behind the scenes, Presley Gerber was struggling with. addiction and mental health issues that he says surfaced. as a young teenager.
