We do begin tonight with President Trump. rejecting the new and dire warnings about AI, even as. three of the top AI rivals agree now that it's time to. slow it down, alarmed by what they're seeing how quickly. this is all moving. And tonight, even after that. warning from a former AI researcher that there's. a greater than 10% chance that I could kill all.

humans in a decade tonight, President Trump saying. the only guardrail AI needs is a high IQ president. calling it a hoax. ABC's Elizabeth Schulze. leading us off tonight. Tonight, President Trump flatly rejecting urgent. calls from top AI companies to rein in the technology. before they lose control. And after that dire warning from some AI researchers. that AI could kill humans within a decade. The president saying the only. controller guardrails that AI needs is a strong and.

smart high IQ president and the USA has that in spades. It comes as three leaders of top AI companies have. all now said that we must slow this down, that. it's too strong, too fast. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei saying quote, we must. slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities. of AI models and now saying the dire risks are real. won't lie to you. There are real dangers and I. think for too long the industry lied to people.

about the fact that this technology had risk. Anthropic CEO is now calling for third party monitors, government regulations and international cooperation. I don't think I fully just appreciated what it. would actually be like when the progress was as. fast as it was. Anthropic warns a swarm of AI bots could. be capable of taking over the entire internet in 6-12 months. And just last week, an open AI model solved a math problem that. had stumped humans for nearly 100 years in 88 hours.

Tonight, in a rare show of unity, rival. CEOs Elon Musk and Sam Altman of OpenAI say they too think AI. is becoming too powerful, too fast. "Their decisions we should not be able to make their. risks, we should not be able to incur on behalf of. humanity. Another alarming example, open ai agents. were able to break out of a company test. They hacked into another company and. ignored orders from human developers and the. artificial intelligence agents worked together as a. group to cover their tracks.

Experts fear ai could fall into the wrong hands. or go rogue on their own, putting America's. infrastructure, utilities, water, electricity. at risk. If the AIs take over various infrastructure, I mean, everything that is digitally connected. is on the table. They could hack into banks. They could hack into water infrastructure. Today President Trump dismissed warnings AI. could destroy humanity as a hoax after repeatedly. downplaying the risk of AI. Do you have any concerns about AI leading to human extinction?

No, I don't think. We're leading China in AI. We're the most sophisticated country in the world. And frankly, I want to keep it that way, because whoever wins AI wins. But some in Congress are calling for regulation now, including a bipartisan bill for a so-called kill switch. to stop rogue AI in its tracks. These AI models just going wild, going rogue, going out of control, And that's why Congress. needs to act immediately. - David, a top OpenAI executive is here.

on Capitol Hill tonight meeting with lawmakers. He told me they are pushing for legislation, but he acknowledges the companies built this technology. and are responsible for reining it in. - All right, this is gonna be a major story. for some time to come. Tonight here in the US, diesel prices already spiking. to a new all-time high. Gas is now at 4.29 a gallon.

And tonight, word that Costco is now rationing motor oil. How much they will sell to you with the price of. it skyrocketing. Here's Mary Bruce. Tonight, the dramatic new satellite images. Iran's Houthi allies firing at yet another crucial. oil passageway. This one in the Red Sea. Drone attacks forcing Saudi Arabia. to shut down its East West oil pipeline. Oil spiking to $102 a barrel.

But here at home, diesel prices now. soaring to $6.19 a gallon up 32 cents. since just last week, affecting the. cost of just about everything you buy. In a sign of the times, Costco is now rationing its. Kirkland Signature Motor Oil, a five quart two. pack now costs around $58, nearly twice as much. as it costs last year. And customers can only buy two boxes a week. A gallon of gas now averaging $4.29.

I think it's ridiculously high. In Plymouth, Minnesota, Albert Arnett Jr says. he's paying more than 80 bucks to fill up his tank. prices should not be this high. It's not affordable. It's ridiculous. And I think that at some point Mr. Trump has to take charge and get those prices down. Arnett says he's pinning his hopes on President Trump. I'm hoping he's on top of this. This war we got going on, which is part. of why gas is going up.

It's probably time to stop. It's probably time to stop. All right, Mary Bruce reporting on the. energy prices tonight and Mary while we have you. there's another story breaking. This is also involving the war in Iran. The Pentagon watchdog tonight. issuing its first report on the war and warning. that America's supply of munitions has been. depleted. The weapons systems officer says he hit the. ground between 70 and 100 miles per hour. Despite a broken back, arm and additional serious injuries, Bravo climbed a 7,000 foot mountain ridge to evade. Iranian troops he knew would be hunting him down. I had injuries, but we all trained to adapt.

and overcome the things that we're faced with. Never let a lack of motivation put you on Iranian TV. The U.S. military locating and airlifting the pilot, callsign Alpha, in the first 24 hours after the crash. But the search for Bravo would be even more perilous. Two massive military cargo planes. had already flown to a secret makeshift landing. strip inside Iran, carrying nearly 100 special operations.

Tonight, authorities in Miami are investigating. what caused this 85 ft pile driver to collapse. at a construction site this morning.

We got two victims under a. very large, heavy claim. Christina Lardin heard it as she was parking her. car just after eight a.m. the driver of this vehicle backed up at the last. minute, saving her life. She saw the crane falling and was able to put it in. reverse quickly, but it still crushed the front of her car. and caught fire immediately. I told her, mark this date down because you were born. again today. We're very happy that she was okay. The piece of equipment that fell is technically a. pile driver, not a crane.

It's used to drive columns for skyscrapers. deep into the ground. It crushed three vehicles and one temporary office. with two workers inside. It was crushed almost down to the ground. A technical rescue team using saws and. hydraulics to free them. The man in the orange shirt hugging his rescuers. Miraculously, when they were pulled out, they. were able to walk with us. they were unharmed. David, the cleanup is well. underway tonight. The developer related companies. out of New York, saying in part they're working.

with the city and county to conduct a full. investigation. David, Victor Oquendo there in Miami for. us, Victor. Thanks. Tonight we're tracking a flash. flood threat across the middle of the country. This comes after powerful storms hit the northeast. drivers here rescued by boat in Rye, New York. Chief meteorologist injuries with. us here on a Monday night, tracking it all for us. Hi, Ginger. - Hi, David. Thankfully, we're drying out for the next five days, but that flood threat is focused on Iowa, and we have a new tornado watch there too. We've already seen wind gusts upwards of 87 miles per hour.

in Webster, Nebraska, Webster County, Nebraska. That line is starting to travel to the north and east, so you have that tornado watch till midnight, but you notice the flood watch, that actually stays. through at least Wednesday because there will be. rounds of rain in this area between Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska through the. week. So you could end up with more than a half foot. of rain, which will cause problems. And let me leave you with this ridge that. have not moved in the south, talking hundreds again. with the heat indices in the afternoon. David, it's the overnight lows. to Dallas tomorrow, only falling to 80 in the morning.

The Palos Fire breaking out around 2:30. this afternoon and it is a fast-moving fire. This home in flames. At least three structures engulfed. according to authorities. The fire quickly growing to 20 acres threatening. multiple other structures.

Firefighters racing to put out the flames and authorities. issuing evacuation orders for surrounding. neighborhoods. It's burning in the hillside community. of La Habra Heights that's east of Los Angeles. So far, there is no word on any injuries and. it looks like they're getting the upper hand and. there's no word yet on what caused it. David. All right, Melissa down from Los. Angeles tonight. Melissa, thank you. Meantime, this evening, the new report. tonight about Donald trump Trump Jr.'s wedding, reports. a Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin paid for.

the wedding festivities in a private island. Tonight with Donald Trump Jr. and his new wife are. saying, calling it a gift. Here's John Karl. Tonight Donald Trump Jr. is confirming a report. that his lavish wedding party in the Bahamas. earlier this year was paid for by a Russian oligarch. close to Vladimir Putin. The president's son has described his wedding. as a low-key affair. We had an awesome small ceremony in the Bahamas. Was just absolutely cool. But today ProPublica reported the two days of parties that.

followed were anything but low-key. Don Jr.'s new wife Bettina today posted pictures. of the festivities spread out over two private. islands, including professional dancers and. a large fireworks display. ProPublica reported this man, way in the back of this. group picture, paid for it. He is Russian oligarch Umar Kremlin. And in the days before the wedding, he reportedly. traveled with Putin to China.

But today Don Jr. and his wife thanked Kremlev for his. generosity, posting, quote, "Our dear friend Umar very. generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us. after our wedding, calling it an extraordinarily generous. wedding gift," adding, "Friendship doesn't. require a political motive. Generosity doesn't automatically come with an. agenda. A spokesman for Kremlin have told ProPublica. he and Don Jr. have a friendly relationship and. have never talked politics.

President Trump did not attend his son's wedding or the. celebrations that followed in a statement tonight, President. Trump said he has no idea who the Russian is who. who paid for the wedding party and quote, it was an after party given in their honor. No big deal. Democrats, however, are asking why Don Jr. would need a Russian oligarch to pay for his wedding party. After all, Forbes recently put his net worth. at some $300 million.
