From ABC News World Headquarters in New York. This is World News Tonight with. David Muir. Good evening. It's great to have you with us here in a very busy. Thursday night. The death of Sir Patrick Stewart. We will look back at a moment. Also, the breaking news on two helicopters. reportedly colliding. But We do begin tonight. with the midterms. Just five days ago now, tonight, the new poll showing the. critical Senate race in South Carolina now tied. So President Trump traveling to another deep red state this. time to help Lindsey Graham's sister, who he.
handpicked for the race. In the Alaska Senate race tonight, multiple investigations. now being launched. Did the Democrats deliberately try to confuse voters? And in Michigan tonight, another close Senate race and the early. vote there already tonight. ABC's Jonathan Karl on the campaign trail, leading us off tonight. Tonight a new poll showing the Senate race. in South Carolina tied. President Trump traveled to the traditionally Republican state. to campaign for his handpicked candidate, Senator Darlene. Graham, as she battles against Democrat Annie Andrews, a.
pediatrician. Graham, the sister of. South Carolina's late Senator Lindsey Graham. Lindsey is looking down. He said, I'd love to be here, but it just didn't work out. But he's very proud of you. He was always proud of his sister. But Darlene Graham, a first-time candidate, has struggled. I'm just going to be honest here. I'm not on national security. I'm not that informed on national security. Trump's attention today was also focused on Alaska.
and the scandal engulfing that Senate race, another pivotal contest that could. And to decide control of Congress. This behavior in our elections cannot be allowed to. continue. It's just terrible. Democrat Mary Patola's campaign accused of trying to confuse. voters by helping to recruit another candidate named Dan. Sullivan to appear on the ballot alongside her Republican. rival, Senator Dan Sullivan. Tonight we're hearing from Peltola.
This is just another distraction. It's another diversion. Every day it's some new, you know, lookalike, >> I'm going to walk over here in a moment. >> But Senator Sullivan is challenging Peltola's. judgment and her integrity. >> She and her team, and at the highest levels of the DSCC, spent over a year scheming in a secret operation to. trick Alaskans to get them to throw away their votes. Alaska's Republican governor now launching an investigation.
to see if criminal charges are warranted. In Michigan tonight, another key Senate race is pitting. Democrat Abdul Al-Sayed against Republican Mike Rogers. Trump has called Al-Sayed a terrorist and a jihadist. He would be the only senator that will have to go through. a metal detector before he's allowed to go into the Senate. I want him to have a metal detector. Today saying this. If you're black or if you're Jewish, and if you vote for Abdul, you're crazy.
El Sayed is fired back. But y'all, I don't care how he pronounces my name. I don't even care that he remembers my whole name. 'cause he can just go on and call me senator after November. Today I spoke with Hassan Nehemi, a Michigan Republican. candidate and party activist who supported Trump and is dismayed. by what he's now hearing from the president and other members. of his party. A lot of people that never voted before came.
out and voted for Abdul. They're hoping to counter that with this hate. So I don't know if it will work or not work. I can say that there is a lot of hate being spewed. I mean, it is hate, right? It is definitely. David, here in Michigan, we have one of the most closely watched. and hotly contested Senate races in the country. Already 1.7 million people have voted here. That is significantly more than we saw vote at this point. during the last midterms. David? Just one more state.
that could decide the control of the Senate. Jon Karl live in Michigan tonight. Jon, thank you. Meantime, tonight, the major shakeup at the Pentagon. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth firing one of America's top. generals, a highly respected military planner. Hegseth claiming the top general leaked classified information. and failed a polygraph test. How often are these polygraphs now being given? Here's Rachel Scott tonight. Tonight Secretary Pete Hegseth firing another top general at. the Pentagon, claiming he leaked classified information, now referring the case for criminal prosecution.
It's the latest in a string of senior military officers. forced out or removed. Lieutenant General Brett Silvia, a 32-year veteran, suddenly pushed out. A senior Pentagon official says he failed three polygraph. tests when questioned about leaking sensitive information. about the wars in Iran and Ukraine to reporters. They say Silvia, quote, "began meeting with journalists. outside of the Pentagon in order to leak classified information.". It's part of a broader and unprecedented effort. to hunt down and punish leakers within the highest.
ranks of the military. Today, President Trump was asked what proof the administration. has that Sylvia was leaking classified information. The president appearing to confuse the top. general, calling him a she. She's got problems. She's going to have big problems. She's going to have big problems, long-term problems. A senior Pentagon official defending the firing, saying Hegseth made the move to "protect national.
security," adding urgent action was needed and. cannot wait another second. And it comes as the Wall Street Journal reports President Trump. met with a top U.S. commander in the Middle East, briefing him on the next potential action for Iran. And David, as for that polygraph test that was given to that. top general who was fired, sources tell us that polygraphs. are being given more often under Secretary Hegstaff's. leadership. There are now dozens of senior. military officers that have either been pushed out or fired. or even sidelined under his tenure.
Rachel Scott reporting tonight. Rachel, thanks. Tonight, the dramatic rescue of a kidnapped 10-year-old. girl in Oregon, taken from her And here's Trevor Alt now. Tonight, the heart-pounding moment an Oregon SWAT team. rescues a 10-year-old girl who'd been kidnapped from her home. in the middle of the night. The U.S. Marshals say they found her tied up in a closet. I thought it was a bomb. Then I heard my dad yelling, and he was like, "Get down on the ground.". Then I heard my dad yelling and he was like, "Get down on the ground.".
But we look out the window in my bathroom and. there's like SWAT trucks. Authorities have arrested 35-year-old Vincent. Chavez, saying he entered that family's apartment. south of Portland, violently assaulting a 12-year-old girl. with a hammer and then taking off with her sister. A family's worst nightmare happened. A young child was taken by force. her sister was viciously assaulted. After an intense 13-hour search, SWAT teams storming that. home 10 miles south from where the girl had been taken.
We found her safe and alive. U.S. Marshals say Chavez tried to escape out the back of the. home before he was captured. Today, he appeared before a judge charged with a slew of. felonies, including kidnapping, sexual abuse, and. attempted murder. and David Prosecutor say the suspect has some kind of. connection with the family and there was no sign of forced. entry at the apartment and that 12 year old they say. was attacked with a hammer is recovering in the hospital. They say she has extensive injuries. David just a horrific story. We're glad that 10 year old girl is.
alive though. Trevor, thank you. There are details just coming in from Oregon tonight. This firefighter from Jacksonville, Florida, Josue Garcia, and his wife, Dia Mary, who is a nurse, were on their honeymoon. They were thrown from their seats. We were pulling our bodies out and anybody that needed. assistance with IV fluids. Crews have been working around the clock at the scene.
trains off in the distance. They've been clearing debris and working to identify victims. This man unsure if his father survived. This is unbearable, he says. This is hell. And tonight, the urgent investigation into what caused. the collision. In newly leaked audio recordings published in. Spanish media, controllers can be heard telling both train. conductors to start moving after they had been stopped on. the tracks due to a computer Another malfunction. "Start moving again," Central Command says, at normal speed. But one train was unable to restart, sitting still on those.
tracks as the second barreled into it. The train driver's union criticizing the audio. leak, saying it only tells half the picture. David, both trains left from this station in. Madrid, and authorities describing a horrific. scene where they crashed. Tonight, they're trying to identify victims and are asking. family members to provide DNA David Marcus Moore in Spain. for us again tonight. Marcus, thank you. There's also news tonight about the passengers, many of them Americans who were kicked off that around.
the world cruise, the US based cruise line suddenly cancelling. the voyage, blaming fuel costs. Here's which onsen tonight. It was apparently too good to be true. Tonight passengers on a so-called. endless cruise around the world left stranded in. Cambodia after the Florida based company behind it ran. out of money, blaming the high cost of fuel. I just wouldn't break into tears. because it's been such a good time. Carol Larson among the 200 passengers, nearly all Americans, who were suddenly given just hours.
to grab their things and get off the Villa V Odyssey. The Odyssey's ending just 755 days into what was supposed. to be a three and a half year dream cruise with stops. in nearly 150 countries. Randy Cassingham and his wife Kit say they sold their home. in Colorado and paid nearly a million dollars to. permanently live on the Odyssey. It's like buying a house, expecting to live there forever. and then being kicked out after two years. The Florida-based startup that runs the ship.
blaming an extraordinary surge in fuel costs. brought on by the war with Iran. But passengers like Lin and Paul Montoya say they. saw the signs months ago. The food quality began to deteriorate about three months. ago and we knew that the company was running out of. money at that time. And David, the company says it will spend the. next 60 days exploring financial restructuring. options but admits no outcome is assured. For passengers, what happens to their.
investment remains unclear. That is a major question, Whit. Thank you tonight. This evening here, the tributes pouring in for actor Sir. Patrick Stewart from the stage to TV and the movies. Tonight here we look back at his brilliant performances, his commanding presence and his charm. Engage. Patrick Stewart rocketed. to stardom as Captain Jean-Luc Picard on the. TV series Star Trek, The Next Generation. The uncertainty, self-discovery, the unknown. These are many of the qualities that make life worth living.
Well, at least to me. He was in his late 40s when he took on that role in 1987. Make it so, Mr. LaForge. And he would go on to star in four Star Trek movies. Not again. The line must be drawn here. This far, no further. I will make them pay for what they've done. But his talent was known decades before. He was a master of Shakespeare. Why did you not send for me?
His commanding voice and presence of force on stage. Is this a dagger which I see before me? He often credited his English teacher for encouraging. him to pursue acting. It must have been something performed by my English teacher. when I was 12 years old because he was the guy who started it. He was the guy who first cast me in a play with adults. Our Juju Chang once asking Patrick Stewart. about his life-changing leap from Shakespeare. to Star Trek.
Walk one, engage. I remember Robert Justman, our producer, saying to me the day. that our pilot episode aired, "More people will see you act. tonight than have seen you act in your entire career in. That's both gratifying and horrifying at the same time. Beloved by generations of fans for his sci-fi roles, there was. Dune in 1984, then Star Trek And years later, Marvel's.
X-Men movies, as Professor Charles Xavier. Alongside his close friend of many decades, Sir Ian McKellen. In fact, they will reprise their X-Men roles. together one final time, in December's Avengers Doomsday. Over the years, Patrick Stewart was often asked about. his two popular characters in X-Men and Star Trek,
saying he admired them, quote, "for their morality, for their. kindness, for their sensitivity, for their compassion.". Tonight, we learn Patrick Stewart died at his home. in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and friends, after a brief battle with Alzheimer's and. Lewy body dementia. When asked how he wanted to be remembered, he would. often say, "For being funny.". But then he would joke, "That probably won't happen.". This may come as a shock to some of you, but I am over 50 now,
by exactly a quarter of a century. Tonight, Patrick Stewart in his own words. One of my heroes, Lawrence Olivier, he said it's marvelous. to hear people sob or gasp at your performances, but the. satisfaction of hearing them laugh is so much greater. Patrick Stewart being celebrated tonight and later right here. tonight, Sir Patrick Stewart and a moving moment.

Sawyer with Sir Patrick Stewart. I was reading through some of the things. you've said in the past. I was so struck. November 1992 in an interview you said, "I was brought up in. a very poor and very violent household. I spent much of my childhood being afraid, and the world. of the amphitheater gave me a legitimate excuse. to go out at night.". Even now, even today, do you carry it with you still? Some of that, yes.
Life is safer for me now than it was when I was a child, but I still find the world of the stage, and even to an. extent in front of the camera, the most secure and reassuring. place to be. That's surprising to people who think about being on a. stage as being embarrassing and terrifying. For most actors, it's not. It's where we feel at home. Conquering Fear on stage with Diane.
