We start now and we'll be live. right into the wee hours of the morning. From ABC News World Headquarters. in New York, this is World News Tonight. with David Muir. Good evening from ABC News Election Headquarters. here in New York and it is great. to have you with us here on a very. busy Tuesday night, of course, election night in America. We begin tonight with breaking news in these high. stakes midterm elections, the first voter polls coming in now. And we have live coverage across the US with control.
of the House and the Senate on the line tonight. President Trump, who attended nearly. 30 campaign rallies, watching from the. White House tonight, he repeatedly told. Republican voters to pretend he's on the ballot. The president traveling to so many deep red states. where Senate races are a dead heat going into tonight. States where they haven't sent. a Democrat to the Senate in decades. Millions of voters still in line at the polls at this hour, more than 58 million Americans voting early. Tonight, 16 Senate battleground states, including Maine, South Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, Kansas,
Texas, Iowa, Minnesota, and Alaska among them. Any one of them could determine who controls the Senate. The first voter polls coming in tonight. Three quarters of voters going to the polls. in these House races rate the economy negatively. according to preliminary ABC News voter polls. Seventy-nine percent tonight say inflation has caused. their families moderate or severe hardship. And tonight, 62 percent say. higher prices are due more to President Trump's. policies than factors outside his control.
Our team live across this nation in all. of the key states tonight. Rick Klein at the big board as always. ABC's Mary Bruce leading us off. Tonight, the extraordinary midterm. elections from Michigan to Maine, Texas to Kansas. Americans lining up to make. their voices heard on President Trump's policies. and on which party will control Congress. More than half a dozen Senate seats considered toss-ups. Most of them in red states Trump won. In Texas, James Tallarico fighting to become the first.
Democrat to win a Senate seat there more than three decades. - We are gonna do something historic. We are gonna shock the nation, shock the world, when we beat the billionaires. and take back Texas. - His Republican opponent, Ken Paxton, banking on Trump's support. - Texas has never been this close. to slipping away. - In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. could be the nation's first Muslim senator. President Trump has attacked. him as a, quote, "jihadist." - I hope. that today's outcome is a demonstration.
And in Alaska's Senate battle, the campaign of Democrat. Mary Peltola, accused of helping to put a second Dan Sullivan. on the ballot alongside Republican incumbent.
Senator Dan Sullivan who voted today in Anchorage. Senator Sullivan has said he will accept. the results of the election. In Ohio, a state Trump won three times the war, tariffs and the economy, now the top issues in the race. between Republican Senator John Husted and former. Senator Sherrod Brown, a Democrat. Then there's backlash. over a brutal attack ad in the governor's race. If you think she'll make.
your life better, you're fooling yourself. Republican Vivek Ramaswamy. enlisting the mother of Democrat Amy Acton. They haven't seen each other. in nearly 50 years, since Acton was 12. and her stepfather was charged with rape. I do think we are ground zero for decency and compassion. and integrity being on the ballot. So many of these races we're watching tonight. Mary Bruce with us here. at election night headquarters in New York. And Mary, take us inside the White House tonight. What are your sources telling you?
What is the president's mindset going into tonight? Well, David, sources inside the White House. say they are feeling cautiously optimistic. They feel the president left it all out on the field, blitzing all of these red states, states that really are only. in play now because of his unpopular policies. Republicans now playing defense. All right. Mary Bruce, you and I have done. these election nights many, many years, but we've never. seen I'm going to head over to the big board, which will be doing an awful lot tonight. In the many hours to come, Rachel Scott will be right here, Rick Klein always at the big board for us.
First of all, just show us the Senate battlegrounds. And can you remember a midterm election. when there were so many Senate races that each one of them. could determine control of the Senate? More than a dozen states voting in a way that could determine. control of the Senate. We don't know exactly what those states will be, but we know. a huge swath of the South, Talk about the Midwest, Texas, Georgia, both Carolinas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, literally from Alaska to Maine with Michigan in between. Any of these states could be absolutely critical, well more than a dozen, right on that knife's.
We want our viewers to know at home tonight. that we've got some incredible tools for you this year. that are going to sort of track the direction. that this is headed as the night goes on. This is the battleground. sort of board where we can actually see hypotheticals. The state goes in one direction, what it means for Republicans or what it means for Democrats. Yeah, and it tells you that any one state. can make a huge difference. Coming into the night, we give Democrats, based on. the pre-election polling, about a two and three chance of taking the Senate. That's not nothing for the Republicans, still a one in three chance. But take a look at what one state could mean. We talked about Michigan,
Abdul Al-Sayed trying to hold on to that seat for Democrats. If he's unable to, if Mike Rogers wins instead, Republicans jump to more than a 75% chance of taking the Senate. If on the other hand, it stays with the Democrats, we're talking about a 75% chance that the Democrats take control. of the Senate, even though they did pick up four. Show us Texas as well. Yeah, in Texas. Everything's big in Texas. Yeah, and it has been almost 40 years since a Democrat. was sent to the Senate by Texas If that streak. is broken tonight, if James Tallarico. wins that race, talking about an eight. in 10 chance that the Democrats control the Senate.
If on the other hand, Ken Paxton pulls it off, we're talking about a two. in three chance that the Republicans maintain. control of the Senate. - All these tools, the benchmarks, we're gonna help. guide viewers right through the night. In the meantime, you showed us the power of Texas tonight. Whit Johnson is there with the latest on the race tonight. Whit? - David, Democrats, as we know, haven't won a Senate seat here. in Texas in more than 30 years, but James Tallarico, a former teacher and seminarian, is hoping to change that. His Republican opponent, State Attorney General. Ken Paxton, has weathered a number of scandals.
It's become the most expensive Senate race in history, more than half a billion dollars, a big chunk. of that coming from Elon Musk, who is backing the Republican. President Trump has campaigned here four times, the most of any state, but there are questions. about whether some voters who supported Trump in 2024. might go Democrat this year, especially Latino voters. Wade Johnson will be in Texas all night long for us. Wade, thank you. Tonight now to the normally deep red Kansas. They haven't sent a Democrat to the Senate.
in nearly 100 years since Herbert Hoover was president. But a dead heat in the polls going into tonight. Stephanie Ramos in Overland Park, Kansas tonight. Stephanie. David, it's been nearly a century since Kansas elected. a Democratic senator. President Trump won this state by more than 16 points. And now the Republican. Senator Roger Marshall is in the fight of his life. Democrat Adam Hamilton is the pastor of the nation's. largest Methodist church and himself a former Republican. This is a farm state. The rising diesel prices tied to the war.
in Iran are hitting hard. Marshall has struggled at times. to address those concerns, even recently calling. this the best economy of his lifetime. And here's a sign of just how close this race is. President Trump traveled here. for the very last rally of these midterms. We're going to be watching Kansas. very closely tonight, Steph. Thank you. From Texas to Kansas, clear right up to Maine tonight, where Republican Senator. Susan Collins fighting to hold onto her seat. in the Senate that she's held for nearly 30 years now. This is Will Reeve in Bangor, Maine tonight. Will. David, Democrats went into this year thinking Maine.
was their best chance to pick up a Senate seat. Senator Susan Collins is the only Republican. up for re-election in a state that Donald Trump lost in 2024. And she's facing Democrat Troy Jackson, a former state lawmaker, former logger, whose campaign got off to a late. start when the first Democratic nominee, Graham Platner, dropped out of the race. Senator Collins points to her 30-year record. delivering for Mainers, but Maine has been been hit hard. by President Trump's tariffs, the trade war with Canada, the high price of heating oil, all strong headwinds.
for Susan Collins as she tries to hold on to her job, All right, we'll be coming to you in Maine all night long. Will Reeve, thank you. ABC News live coverage. of the midterm election starts just moments from now, 7 p.m. right at the top of the hour.
