ABC News Election Headquarters here in New York and it is great. to have you with us here on a very busy Monday night. There is breaking news tonight involving President Trump. and the midterm elections and these. And I'm David Muir.
Thank you for joining us. I'm David Muir. Floating into flames. Nine people were on board. They were all killed. The plane flying from Texas. to the Bahamas when it reported heavy turbulence. You'll see the storm cells on the radar. that that plane was flying through in just a moment. And tonight, investigators now believe a key. part of that plane may have come off before it crashed. One of the pilots, 20 years old, she could be heard saying, "We're going to crash into the ground.". ABC's Victor Oquendo leading us off tonight.
on the scene in Florida. Tonight chilling new details. on the final seconds before that horrific. jet crash in Florida that left nine people dead. Watch as that jet nosedives, plummeting 32,000 feet per minute before smashing. into the ground and exploding in a fireball. Tonight federal investigators now say. that plane may have broken apart midair before crashing. We do have some indication. that the aircraft was breaking up before impact. We may find parts of the aircraft.
some distance away from the actual impact site. Officials say the Learjet 60 took off from Austin, Texas at 10.37 Sunday morning, heading to the Bahamas. A family member telling ABC News, 20-year-old. Natalia Cadelia Figueres, seen here, was one of the two pilots at the controls. She reportedly obtained. her pilot's license while in high school. Roughly two hours after takeoff, that jet, crossing over South Florida with severe storms. >> The weather conditions.
are a major focus of the investigation. >> At 1247 p.m., one of the pilots telling. air traffic control the plane is experiencing icy. conditions and turbulence. >> We have light, clear ice that is manageable and moderate turbulence. The pilots requesting to climb to 37,000 feet but less than 30. seconds later flight radar 24 data showing the plane appearing. to fly into a strong storm cell before suddenly plummeting. The pilot declaring a mayday and was heard.
saying we are going to crash into the ground. Seconds later the jet slamming into a residential street. in Palm Beach County leaving a massive crater. Debris flying as far as half a mile away damaging. homes and injuring at least one One person on the ground. I honestly thought it was like a bomb or something. Tonight experts pouring over video frame by frame, this image appearing to show part of the tail missing. That piece of the tail is what. would have allowed the crew to pull out of the dive. Without it, there is no chance that they could recover.
And tonight we're learning more about the victims. in a joint statement from their families. Adam Robinson and his wife, Helen Sharp, and their two young children, Charlie and Emma, ages two and four, were on board. family saying they touched so many lives. David, storms in the area. tonight slowing investigators as they work through the scene. In this image you can see. the jet in a steep dive plunging 32,000 feet per minute. Authorities investigating the weather on Sunday. and if the plane broke apart midair before crashing.
The debris field spans half a mile, but parts of the plane. could be even further from the crash site. David? Just horrific images, Victor Oquendo. Victor Oquendo, our thanks to you. We're thinking about that family and, of course, those pilots tonight. We move on with the other news tonight. The high-stakes midterm. elections tomorrow night, of course, will be on the air tomorrow night here all night long. Tonight, President Trump choosing to deliver his closing. message in front of one of. his renovation projects, the Reflecting Pool. The midterms will determine control of Congress. And tonight, the new poll right here.
on these all-important Senate races and what it reveals. Here's Mary Bruce. Right on the eve of the midterm elections, President Trump choosing to deliver his closing message. in front of one of his projects, the reflecting pool. Today I'm thrilled to announce the official opening of the. Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Now we're giving serious thought. to changing the name to the Trump Reflecting Pool.
No, I'm only kidding. The pool renovations cost taxpayers more than $16 million. Does somebody have those pictures for me? The president detailing the improvements. We're replacing all of the grass in all of the parks. because like the human being, grass has a life also. Speaking for more than 23 minutes before mentioning. tomorrow's election. Trump has held 28 rallies, largely in states he won before. Today he gave himself an out if Republicans.
have a bad night. For some reason the sitting president. doesn't win the midterms, but we gave this a very strong shot. Across the country, more than 57 million. Americans have already voted, on track to outpace the early vote in the last midterms. In Michigan, one of the nation's most closely. watched Senate races pits. Republican Mike ...against Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. At the 11th hour, the Democrat El-Sayed, defeated in the primary,
Congresswoman Haley Stevens, showed up at church with Rogers, declaring she was now endorsing him. Abdul said that I was no longer. welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away. And he's right. And that's why I am endorsing Mike Rogers. El-Sayed calling it a distraction, instead focusing on Michigan voters. They just want to talk about me and my name and my faith. My name and my faith. are not the reason we can't afford our gas.
My name and my faith. are not the reason we can't afford our groceries, not the reason we can't see a doctor. It is their policies that are doing that. But Rogers is trying to capitalize on the moment. We've got elected officials. in this state, Democrats, saying I can't vote for him, he's too extreme. ...and the argument. is listen to the people who are around him. In ruby red Texas, Democrat James Tallarico taking. on Republican Ken Paxton. The left in this country keeps getting more and more radical.
Tallarico casting the race as David versus Goliath. David wasn't as big or as strong as Goliath. He didn't have as many weapons, but he had hope. He had faith. We had a slingshot. The people of Texas are my slingshot. And on November 3rd, those Goliaths aren't going. to know what hit them. And David, we have some breaking news to report. The Supreme Court has just rejected the Trump.
administration's push for California to set. aside 20,000 ballots that the administration. claims could have been cast by people who are not citizens. It comes just one day after a federal judge in Alaska. rejected the administration's. effort to intervene in the Alaska Senate race. All right, Mary Bruce, live at the White House tonight, about to make the trip from D.C. right up to New York. Mary, can't wait to see you for election night right here. Thank you. And one more note tonight showing just how. fascinating this night could be tomorrow night. It could be a real nail-biter. The new polls tonight on several key Senate races,
many in normally deep red states. And what these polls show. So let's bring in Rachel Scott. He's already over at the big. board getting ready for the big night. And what do these polls show, Rachel? Well, David, these polls coming. in the 11th hour, right ahead of Election Day. I want to take you right to it. Starting in Maine, it is the Democrat Troy Jackson, 51 percent, pulling ahead of the Republican. incumbent Senator Susan Collins, who is at 45 percent. Let's take you to Michigan, Abdul Al-Sayed, the Democrat, 53 percent, several points ahead. of the Republican Mike Rogers, who's trailing behind at 42.
Over to Ohio, the former Senator Sherrod Brown. ahead here 49% of the incumbent. Senator John Custod a Republican who is at 44. And over to Iowa, I mean take. a look at this, this is a dead heat. The Democrat Josh Turick 48%, the Republican Ashley Henson 47%. This race is neck and neck. Over to Texas, an unexpected battleground, Democrat James Tallarico at 50% polling ahead And now, for the most recent race, the Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is at 43%.
And the red state of Kansas, it is the Democrat Adam Hamilton. sitting at 49% heading into Election Day ahead. of the incumbent Roger Marshall who is at 44%. David, many of these states. have not sent a Democrat to the Senate in decades. Yeah, a lot of these states. are deep red states, at least normally speaking. A very different midterm election on tap here. We should point out that many of these races. are within the margin of error. We've seen We've seen polling errors before, but what. this does show is it's going. to be a very close night, so we want everyone to tune in.
In the meantime, you're tracking another key. number because we know what voters have been telling. us about the key issue this election. The economy, the economy that's top of mind. I want to take you to one more number here. The average price for a gallon of gas, $4.14 a gallon. The average price for diesel right now, averaging $6.29 a gallon. If these two numbers hold, it will be the highest gas. and diesel prices on record ever on Election Day, David. All right, Rachel Scott, this time tomorrow you have some company. Rick Klein will be at the big board with you, and of course,
John, Mary, Lindsey, and Martha will be up here at the desk. Thanks so much for being here in night early. The entire powerhouse political team will be here, and our correspondents from Alaska, Texas, Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, Maine, so many other states, too, all across this country. David, there will unfortunately be rain. and storms getting in the way of some voting tomorrow, but let's talk about what's happening tonight. We still have flash flood warnings in Florida. from Vero Beach to Port St. Lucie, West Palm 2. That means you don't want. to go out and drive if you could avoid at all costs. The next couple of hours, we're going to keep seeing. these slow moving thunderstorms drop an additional three plus. inches of rain on places that have had 10 to 20.
Not good, but they will dry out tomorrow and certainly. going into the weekend.
