We begin tonight here with. the breaking news, this new plan to get. those Americans off the ship amid this.

hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship in. the Atlantic. The CDC now planning to. bring home those American passengers. The ship is now due to arrive in the. Canary Islands in Spain this weekend, expected to anchor just offshore. It. will not be allowed to dock. Everyone on. board will receive medical exams. including the 18 Americans who will then. be brought off the ship in hazmat gear. and then placed on military planes. Those American passengers will be taken. into the national quarantine unit in. Nebraska, the same facility used during. the early days of the COVID pandemic.

ABC's Maggie Rulli leading us off. tonight from the Canary Islands. >> Tonight, protests on Tenerife in Spain's. Canary Islands. Port workers worried. about the spread of hantavirus as the. ship at the center of that deadly. outbreak arrives this weekend. Police. here now preparing for the ship with 140. on board including 18 Americans. Right. now, we're in the port where the ship. won't even be allowed to dock. We. expected to anchor in the water right. here. Everyone on board will be given a. medical assessment before being ferried.

off in small groups, taken to the port. here in hazmat suits, and then boarded. onto military guarded buses and taken to. the airport. >> A doctor on board sharing these new. images from the ship showing medical. teams suited up during the evacuation of. sick patients a few days ago. Tonight, the US State Department says it's in. direct communication with Americans on. board. A A team will escort them onto a. charter flight heading to the national. quarantine unit in Omaha, Nebraska. It's. the same facility used to quarantine. COVID patients in the early days of the.

outbreak. >> Should one of these individuals develop. symptoms concerning for hantavirus, they. will be assessed by our team and. transferred into our biocontainment unit. for care. >> The CDC emergency response is classified. as a level three, the lowest risk to the. public. The president saying he's been. briefed. >> It's very much we hope under control. >> Tonight, a Spanish woman with symptoms. is being tested after traveling on the. same flight as a sick passenger from the. ship who later died. So far, there have. been no confirmed infections beyond the.

ship. Health teams now monitoring nine. Americans across half a dozen states, including two people from New Jersey who. were potentially exposed to an infected. cruise ship passenger during a flight, along with the seven Americans who. returned from that cruise two weeks ago. None have shown symptoms. Kristen Musson. survived hantavirus in 2023 and knows. just how fast it can strike. >> It was just labeled as an unknown lung. condition, and I didn't know if it was. going to be transferred to my family. I.

think within 2 hours I was put under a. life support. >> For many Americans, hantavirus is. triggering flashbacks to COVID. >> I can't do it. I can't. You I gave you. my one lifetime pandemic, and that was. coronavirus. Like, I can't do another. one. >> But tonight, experts believe this. outbreak will not be another pandemic. >> No lockdowns coming. Um. COVID spread very, very easily, and it. spread even when you didn't have. symptoms. None of that is true for.

hantavirus. So, this is something that. is going to kind of burn itself out in. the upcoming weeks or months. >> And then, David, we were at the port. earlier and watched as police cordoned. off a large area getting ready for those. passengers, and they told us that on. arrival, everyone will be in those. hazmat suits and then sectioned off into. five different groups based on their. level of risk. >> David. Canvas, an online tool used by schools. across the country, middle schools, high. schools, and colleges in the middle of.

final exams. >> It's unbelievable. >> The program is used by teachers and. students to upload assignments, communicate with each other, study, and. check grades. >> It's all my lecture materials on it. >> Some students logging on yesterday were. greeted by this ransom note from the. hacking group Shiny Hunters, warning. their schools to negotiate a settlement. You have till the end of the day by 12. May 2026 before everything is leaked. >> My computer turned black, and it said. warning because your institution refused. to pay the ransom, we um.

we will release the information. >> The hackers say they accessed users'. personal data, including names, email. addresses, student IDs, and several. billions of private messages among. students and teachers. >> It's kind of scary to think about how. close we are to the finish line really, and having to worry about our. information getting leaked. >> David, tonight Canvas is back online, but with questions about the safety of. students' data. Some universities still. postponing their final exams. Canvas's. parent company, Instructure, saying they. quote, "Found no evidence that the. threat actor currently has access to the.

platform, and they are putting. additional protections in place." David. >> Yeah, this was really rattling for so. many students and their families. Matt, thank you. Here's John Karl. >> Today, a big blow to Democrats with the. midterms fast approaching, Virginia. Supreme Court struck down a new.

congressional map that would have. created four House seats that Democrats. likely would have won. Virginia voters. approved the new map last month, but. today the court ruled that the Virginia. legislature violated the state's. constitution when it put the map on the. ballot and struck it down. President. Trump called the decision a huge win for. the Republican Party and America, but. California Governor Gavin Newsom fumed. that Republicans were overturning the. will of the voters, saying that's been.

their playbook in other states, too, writing, quote, "MAGA has rigged the. system.". This comes as both parties battle for. advantage in unprecedented race to. redraw congressional lines before. November's elections. Republican lawmakers are now racing to. redraw districts in the deep south. This. was the scene today in Louisiana. The Republican effort there comes after.

the Supreme Court rolled back a key. provision of the Voting Rights Act. It had led to majority black districts. across the south. >> All this sets the stage for an all-out. battle for control of Congress in. November. Democrats are still considered. the favorites to win back control of the. House, but that effort just got a little. harder. tonight, a chilling discovery nearly 30. years after the disappearance of Kristin. Smart. The new evidence here as. authorities move in on a key location in. California. Here's Trevor Holt. >> Tonight, the major revelation in the. search for Kristin Smart. Investigators. now say they found evidence suggesting. human remains were present at the home. of her killer's mother. >> We believe that a human remains were. there at one time or still there. So, we. can't call it Kristin, but, you know, um.

we think there's there's evidence to. support human remains. >> It's been 30 years since Smart. disappeared. Paul Flores was convicted. of her murder in 2022, but her body was. never recovered. The San Luis Obispo. Sheriff now says new information allowed. authorities to execute a search warrant. this week at the home of Flores' mother, Susan. Investigators are using forensic. technology, including ground penetrating. radar and soil analysis, to detect. potential traces of human remains.

Sheriff vowing to leave no stone. unturned. >> We are not leaving that house until we. are sure that we have checked. everything. We have not recovered.
