News Tonight with David Muir. Good evening. We begin tonight with breaking news. The U.S. launching new strikes on Iran right now, but we. begin here with the emergency in New York City. Fears a building could collapse, leading to mass evacuations. At least nine buildings evacuated, including. a school and a hotel, where guests were ordered. out of their rooms quickly. The images tonight from inside that New York City building, structural supports buckling, discovered by construction. crews inside who said windows and concrete were cracking.

This photo posted by the fire department showing the building. clearly leaning to one side. The area around it tonight just blocks from Grand Central. Station, now sealed off. Tonight authorities say they plan to be on the. scene right into the night to try to stabilize. the building. Our chief investigative correspondent Aaron. Katersky leading us off from the scene tonight. Tonight, the race to stabilize a 37-story building in midtown. Manhattan at risk of collapse. We have columns partially down on 21 and 22, and we have floors. sagging between 21 and 26.

ABC News obtaining this dramatic video from inside. the Eastside high-rise blocks from Grand Central Terminal, showing steel support columns bending. The building remains unstable. The compromised building appearing to lean. It appears just by looking at it, the building is leaning. Is the building leaning? The concern is that since we have been on site. in the early morning, we have seen continued. shift of the structure. Around 8 a.m., construction workers began noticing.

a structural column on the 21st floor. were starting to warp. Then investigators found multiple. cracks and the floors beginning to cave. First they said they were working on the floor. and they started to watch some beams start. to bend, windows start to break, some concrete start to crumble. Authorities evacuated the building and at least nine. others nearby, including a hotel and school. So I walked into the office. I was there for about 10 minutes and then they were like, "All right, everybody out, evacuate, get out now.". Bumper-to-bumper traffic stretching for blocks.

All workers were accounted for. There were no injuries. It's a very serious situation. The high-rise, once the headquarters of the. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, is being converted into. residential apartments. What was going on up there is something that I've. never seen in my 20 years. In the last year, the building has logged seven violations, from unsafe building demolition to debris falling from. high heights resulting in more than $32,000 in fines.

In the last several hours, David, they've sealed off the. streets here and a small team of experts has gone floor. by floor into that building and determined that the damaged. columns are no longer moving so work can begin now to. try and shore up the building with emergency trusses. That work's expected to last throughout the night. and into the coming days. It is still very alarming. Aaron Katersky leading us off here tonight. Aaron, thank you. Also breaking tonight, the U.S. striking Iran right now. The U.S. says it is responding to Iran's attacks on ships.

in the Strait of Hormuz. This escalation just weeks after President Trump's. agreement with Iran. So Rachel Scott tonight on these U.S. strikes. Tonight President Trump touching. down in Ankara for the NATO summit as tensions with Iran. soar. U.S. Central Command announcing new powerful strikes, pledging. to impose hefty costs on Iran for attacking three. commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz in just the past 24. hours. Video posted online. showing explosions from the American attacks.

U.S. officials tell us the strikes targeted. Iranian defense and coastal surveillance systems, missile and drone launch sites, and port facilities, calling the attacks a clear violation of the. ceasefire and wholly unacceptable, the U.S. also revoking part of the deal President Trump. signed that allowed Iran to sell its oil on the. international market. Meanwhile, here at the NATO summit, President. Trump lashing out at America's allies, accusing.

David, these are powerful strikes that. we are seeing tonight. Iran is vowing to retaliate. All of this calling into question that fragile. ceasefire and the prospect of any longer term. deal toward peace. Rachel Scott live in Turkey. Rachel, thank you. Tonight in Maine, an all-out scramble to. replace Graham Plattner as the Democratic nominee. news-making effort. control of Congress. In just 24 hours, dozens of leading Democrats, including. more than 20 senators, now demanding Plattner drop out. after an ex-girlfriend came forward to accuse him of sexual.

assault. Did Grant Plattner rape you? By definition, yes. Absolutely. Plattner denying the. allegation, but saying he's reevaluating his campaign. We are taking the time to reflect on. the best path forward. Today, his top supporter, Senator Bernie Sanders, who stood by him through a series of scandals, saying he spoke with Plattner and, "In light of these. very serious allegations, I have recommended. that he step aside.". Plattner has until Monday to remove his name from the ballot,

But as he deliberates, his party is moving on. Tonight, several Maine Democrats already raising. their hands to take his place. David, again, Platner has until Monday to remove. his name from the ballot. If he does, the Maine Democratic Party would have. two weeks to replace him, but there's no clear. roadmap for exactly how that would play out. David. Uncharted territory. for sure, Jay O'Brien. Tonight, after powerful storms snapped trees, swamped. highways and collapsed a big box store's roof, crews are. cleaning up a tangled mess of shattered trees and downed power. lines across the Northeast. Connecticut hit hard. You look right down that street over there, you see. all the trees that came down, knocking out power. for thousands of people.

On top of that, some parts of the state got two months. worth of rain in a single day. Overnight, northeast of Pittsburgh, swift water teams. using boats and ropes to rescue multiple stranded. people in Clearwater County. in Charlotte, North Carolina. Helmet cam video shows flames exploding from a. home that was struck by lightning. One of three lightning sparked fires in the. city overnight. And new terrifying video from. Paramus, New Jersey shows the moment Janet Scalera was.

nearly hit by a massive tree while standing in her. garage. Officials in the New York City suburb declaring. a state of emergency there. And David, you can see that massive tree. there behind me coming down on top of that car. and home here in Paramus. There is damage like that across this town as the. recovery continues. watches, one to two inch per hour rainfall rates, possible until midnight tonight. Note the heat advisories, though. There have been some thunderstorms around. Myrtle Beach, but wow, has it been hot and humid all. the way down to Jacksonville, and will be for the coming days. We're talking about temperatures that go into. that dangerous territory, like the feels like of. 112 tomorrow in North Charleston, 109 on Thursday. This heat is cumulative and the overnights don't. get that cool either. Jackson and Baton Rouge, 105, not out of the. realm of possibility. Then we have to talk severe storms tonight.

Most of South Dakota over to Minneapolis, back into. Montana, damaging wind. The main hazard tomorrow, just east of Denver, over to Green Bay. David Ginger Zee with us tonight. Kirk was shot and killed. Kanae Whitworth with the video tonight. It's a compilation of videos. Tonight prosecutors in Utah unveiling a mountain. of surveillance video in their case against. Tyler Robinson, tracing his steps on the day he allegedly.

assassinated Charlie Kirk. After arriving at Utah Valley University, a lead investigator. testifying that Robinson interacted with members of. Kirk's group, Turning Point USA, at the amphitheater just hours. before Kirk was gunned down. Police tracking his movements, pointing to this key video. He also is walking with a gait or a limp in this video. Again, he seems to be having issues walking. Prosecutors have said the rifle was hidden in Robinson's pants.

Individual then stands up. Today, they showed video of a figure on the roof they. also say was Robinson in what they called a prone position. Moments later, the person is jumping down to the ground. and running toward the woods. And police today revealed 12 hours after the shooting as they. were hunting for Kirk's killer. An officer actually stopped Robinson's car near. campus and was suspicious. I guess cop intuition, but there was something about the. interaction that made him make a note of the license. plate of the vehicle. But it would be another 22 hours after that encounter until.

Robinson turned himself into police and was charged. with Kirk's murder. And David, Robinson still hasn't entered a plea. Later this week, prosecutors will play a recorded video of. his former romantic partner, the one authorities say. he confessed to. Kena Whitworth following the case for us. Kena, thank you. Tonight, the disturbing images of a toddler. at a childcare center appearing to be tossed. by a worker right over her head. We're gonna freeze the video here. It is disturbing. Tonight, what the parents say they were told.

and then what the video showed. Here's Rhiannon Ally. - Tonight, video showing what looks like. your typical childcare setting, children playing under. the supervision of staff. But the disturbing scene that unfolded at the Bay Club. in El Segundo, California, is now at the center of a lawsuit. This 23-month-old boy in the green shirt seen reaching for. a worker who takes his hands. The woman starts to swing the boy through her legs once, twice, then all the way up in the air over her head, letting. go of his hands as he comes crashing down onto the floor.

The woman appearing to fall over the boy, who is seen. crying as other staffers watch in shock. The boy's parents Police allege the club told them. an employee fell over while she was in a squatting position. and their son was only about one and a half feet above the. ground, calling that a complete lie. More than a year later, the parents claim their son is. suffering symptoms like hearing loss from the blunt head. trauma and concussion. David, the couple says they are members of the country club. that offered those childcare services.

In California, these facilities are not required to be licensed. The Bay Club tells us they cannot comment on. ongoing litigation, but the safety of their. members is their highest priority. David. North of Grand Rapids, body camera video captures. the frantic moments the Osceola County Sheriff's. Deputy jumps out of his vehicle and runs to that. truck on the side of the road. Flames already shooting from the hood. Bystanders jumping into action too. Come on! [Gunshots]. The driver still trapped, his leg stuck. Several people pulling him to safety, moments before.

the car is completely engulfed in flames. My leg is stuck! Don't pull! Don't pull! [Sirens]. Don't pull! I'm trying to save you, man! Come on! Come on! [Grunts]. Yes! Yes! David, the sheriff's office says everyone's quick. thinking, selfless actions and willingness to risk their own. safety made all the difference in rescuing the driver. David, that's just incredible. Health officials say 23 cases of the severe pneumonia. have been confirmed in two neighborhoods. No deaths reported. The health department believes the likely source. of this is bacteria from a cooling tower in the area.
