News Tonight with David Muir. Good evening and it's great to have you with us. here on a Monday night. We do begin tonight with the breaking news, the. storms in the northeast. We have learned tonight they have now turned deadly. Trees down on cars, buses, trains, drivers. trapped, the storms from Philadelphia up through. New York and Massachusetts, and then the horrific fires tonight. Look at this, the emergency unfolding. These are catastrophic fires in and around Spokane, Washington. Tens of thousands escaping as flames move in, hundreds of.

homes burning to the ground, firefighters working. around the clock. We have it all covered tonight, beginning with ABC's. Alex Stone in the Fire Zone. Tonight, families fleeing walls of flames, homes engulfed as. multiple wildfires converge around Washington state's. second largest city. A Spokane firefighter's body camera showing what. they were up against as the three fast-moving. >> The wildfires broke out Saturday. Hand-to-hand combat with the roaring.

flames. Some 67,000 people in Spokane County forced to. flee on a moment's notice. Paige Klein's brother grabbing their dog. This was a view out of their car window. More than 700 homes and businesses confirmed destroyed, but authorities fear the number could be far higher. I've been to a lot of places around the world, and I can tell you today that that's a war zone. When the flames came racing through here, it sheared off the. water lines into these homes. Now, two nights later, still water is pouring out.

of most of these homes. It's complete devastation. We love this house. We raised our kids here, and everything is gone. John and Kathy Sherrick were out of town when the. fires destroyed their house. This is all that's left. I just feel hurt. I feel lost. Every every memory of my children are down there. Every memory of my grandchildren are down there. It's just right now I just feel empty. David, tonight, these are those scenes families. are returning home to.

Firefighters say they're getting a bit of a break in. the weather until Thursday when the heat and wind return. David, let's hope that break really helps them. Thank you. Alex Stone live from Spokane. We're thinking about all those families. And as I mentioned off the top tonight, the storms sweeping. through the northeast today have also turned deadly. Drivers trapped in flash flooding trees down. on cars, buses, trains. A woman has been killed in Massachusetts. And here's Gio Benitez. Tonight, drivers stalled in high water as another soaking. storm wreaks travel havoc from Philly to New York to Boston.

In Newark, New Jersey, drivers that risked the deep water. stalled out as tractor trailers made waves all around them. Others pushed their dead cars out of the water as crews. worked to clear storm drains. Blocked drains brought muddy floods to neighborhoods near. Springfield, Massachusetts, too. In Connecticut, water gushing over the gas station's retaining. wall, flooding the entire area. The torrential rain was enough to bring down multiple trees. around New York's five boroughs, this one crushing a car. I thought it was just thunder.

Outside Boston, in Plymouth, authorities say a woman sitting. on her porch was killed when a gust of wind took. down this massive tree. One person was hurt after a tree fell on this commuter. train on New York's Long Island, and a tree came down. on a Greyhound bus on I-95 in Westport, Connecticut, thankfully only a few minor injuries. And David, right now at Newark here, flights have been. delayed by about two hours, 900 flight cancellations. across the country, but it is looking better tomorrow, David.

Hi David, you know, three and a half plus inches of. rain broke a daily record in Hartford, Connecticut, but now the white caps on the Hudson tell you. we have cleared and the wind has picked up. Let's talk about a place that. would love to have some of that rain and that. is the Northern Rockies, back to the Pacific Northwest. Air quality alerts are what I want your eye to go to, Seattle and Portland included in this, because. tomorrow as the winds shift, Some of these big populations.

are going to be seeing the smoke from these fires. Idaho covered in what could be unhealthy. Check airnow.gov before you head out. Tonight, the deadly shooting at a fast food restaurant. Three people killed, seven wounded. And tonight here, the dramatic video showing. armed bystanders opening fire, trying to get the gunmen to. stop in Twin Falls, Idaho. Trevor Ault is there tonight.

Tonight, investigators are searching for the motive. in this Idaho mass shooting. What's happening? What happened? What's happening? Shoot it. Shoot it. Three people killed, seven injured, outside an In-N-Out restaurant in this crowded shopping center. Get out of here. Get out of here. Police have identified the suspect. as 24-year-old Chad Williams, seen here dressed in black, armed with a long gun. "Report multiple people down.". Hundreds of people running for cover as the shots rang out, but investigators say two men, an off-duty state trooper. and this man, 35-year-old Jordan Salinas, fired back.

"I peeked around the right-hand side of that. sign closest to the road, And that's where I saw the. individual with his rifle. pointed at the vehicles. Authorities believe those heroic actions. drove the shooter from the scene and likely saved lives. He seemed unusually comfortable aiming. that rifle at those cars. And then as soon as some rounds started coming at him, everything changed. Immediately, all that bravado he had immediately crumbled.

This In-N-Out had opened just a week prior. The company says one of their workers was killed. while caring for customers. Christopher Claunch was also killed. His sister telling the New York Times he'd worked at. a recovery center helping people with addiction. His partner said he loved traveling, cooking, and the outdoors. We also spoke to Linsey Tangy, who found several of. the victims at the scene. This is just not our community. Like, none of us expected this.

And David, that hero civilian Jordan told me along with him, there were dozens of people who jumped in to help with. first aid and all of that action very likely saved lives. All right, Trevor, I know you'll have much more from. that hero tomorrow on GMA. Thank you. In the meantime, we turn next tonight to the battle over the. reflecting pool in the nation's capital. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro's decision to drop charges, saying. it was a botched installation, not vandalism. Tonight, President Trump lashing out. And here's Mary Bruce. Tonight President Trump slamming his close ally, U.S.

Attorney Jeanine Pirro, for dropping. her case against former Olympian David Hearn, who was charged. with vandalizing the newly renovated reflecting pool. Pirro concluding the damage was caused not by vandalism, but by a botched installation. Really disappointed with Jeanine Pirro. She folded like an umbrella. Just days after Trump spent $15 million in taxpayer money. to paint the reflecting pool American flag blue, the paint.

started peeling, chunks floating up to the surface. Trump providing no evidence blamed vandals and soon after. authorities arresting Hearn, who was riding his bike and. stopped to check out the damage, dipping his hand in the water. Hearn willfully destroyed property. At the time, Pirro accused Hearn of deliberately. pulling up the paint. Did he have any tools or was it just his bare hands? Right now, we believe it's his bare hands, both hands. Does that indicate in your belief that it was probably.

damaged before or do you believe that he... Oh, he damaged it. ...further, but do you believe it had already. been damaged before? He damaged the pool. But Friday, Pirro dropped the charges, acknowledging documents from the Department of the Interior. indicate the damage to the pool was the result of a botched. installation and not vandalism. Pirro blaming the contractor. I'm not saying I was 100% thrilled with the contractor, but the contractor was rushing.

We wanted to get it open for July 4th, and we got it done. But in addition, there was vandalism. Tonight, David Hearn's lawyer calling the case against him. an abuse of government power. And David, tonight, Jeanine Pirro spotted here at the. White House, as sources say the president has mused about. whether to fire her. Meanwhile, Trump's Attorney General nominee, Todd Blanch, is now on track to be confirmed after giving in to the. demands of two key Republican senators and putting in writing.

his pledge to kill the $1.8 billion taxpayer fund to pay. out Trump's political allies, including January 6th rioters. Mary Bruce, live at the White House. Mary, thank you. Tonight, the U.S. war and Iran. President Trump again calling off what he says was going. to be a massive attack against Iran saying Iran called. him and said, please don't attack, we'll make a deal. Tonight, Iran denying any talks with the U.S. Here's John Karl. After claiming he had just called off what would have been.

the largest military attack since World War II, President. Trump said today he was giving Iran one more chance to make. a deal. I want to give him every last chance before decapitation. Trump insists he called off the attack because. Iran's leaders asked him to. They called me and they said, please don't. attack, we'll make a deal. That's the real truth, and everyone knows it. It's at least the seventh time Trump has threatened. a major new attack, only to call it off, claiming.

progress on peace talks. Tonight, Iran flatly denied any negotiations with. the U.S. were underway. Still, Trump insists there will soon be an agreement to. reopen the Strait of Hormuz. We're talking about the Strait, the opening of the Strait, having it open literally by tomorrow, completely open. The president is well aware that gas prices have jumped to. more than $4 a gallon, up $1.13.

The president said the Strait of Hormuz will be fully. reopened as soon as tomorrow. It's unclear how that would happen, but he insisted he. would agree to no arrangement that allows the Iranians. to charge a toll. David? John Karl tonight, John. John, as you know, as this war plays out here in the U.S. tonight, the urgent question, who is targeting multiple. cities and their water plants? The number of cyber attacks now growing. So let's get right to our chief investigative correspondent, Aaron Katersky, with us tonight. Aaron, what have you learned?

Well, tonight, David, those cyber attacks against critical. infrastructure in this country are spreading. Sources tell ABC News that federal officials. are now concerned water and wastewater utilities. in at least a dozen states may have been compromised. So far there have been no widespread disruptions. One of the affected states, Michigan, saying tonight there. are no known impacts that pose to public health concern. But David, the fear is Iran is showing its. capacity to retaliate as President Trump threatens.

a possible escalation of the war. All right, Aaron and the team will stay on this. Thanks, Aaron. Tonight, the continuing concern over this intestinal. illness across the country. And now the first two deaths have been reported. More than 18,000 cases in 45 states now. Elizabeth Schulze is back with us. Elizabeth, what do we know? David, the ongoing record outbreak of that. parasitic stomach illness has now turned deadly. Officials in Michigan reporting two deaths. In both cases, the patients had significant underlying.

health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis. and dehydration. Nationwide, more than 18,000 people have gotten. sick in 45 states. The FDA linking cases in Michigan and. eight other states to iceberg lettuce sourced by Taylor Farms. in Central Mexico, then served at Taco Bell. The companies voluntarily recalled that. lettuce. This illness is not typically deadly. Officials are still investigating any other. sources of food that may have been contaminated.

Elizabeth, thank you. Tonight, the Ohio congressman under fire, Max Miller, accused. of abusing his ex-wife and their two-year-old daughter. He denies it. But tonight, his former father-in-law, Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, speaking out. Here's Jay O'Brien. Tonight, the extraordinary family feud rocking. the Republican Party. Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno declaring his. former son-in-law, Ohio Congressman Max Miller, unfit. to serve, accusing Miller of increasingly erratic and. dangerous behavior and insisting he needs serious.

psychological help. The congressman was married to the senator's daughter, Emily, who claims she was a victim of spousal abuse. Miller says that's just not true. I categorically deny abusing my former wife. In a February police report obtained by ABC News, the. congressman's ex-wife claims he threw her against the wall, once held a gun to her head, and another time threw hot water. on her. Miller says she's lying. As proof, he said his ex-wife offered to cook. him dinner several days after one of the alleged.

Ask yourself, if I had assaulted her, would she have offered. to cook me dinner six days The congressman's ex-wife. also told authorities he may have abused their. two-year-old daughter, claiming that after one visit. with Miller, the child came home with a fractured collarbone. "I have never abused our daughter.". Miller says his daughter was hurt by employees. at her daycare. The local Department of Children. and Family Services did not find evidence to. substantiate allegations.

And David Miller was a close aide to President Trump. Today the president calling him a good person, saying. these are accusations. Meantime, Republicans are anxious. Unless Miller drops out by this week, his name will be. on the ballot in November. David? We turn to Colorado now, Jay. A police officer has been indicted in the deadly. shooting of a man in Aurora.

Matthew Neely now facing murder and manslaughter charges. Neely's accused of shooting Rajon Belt-Stubblefield after. a traffic stop last August. The indictment says Neely tackled Belt-Stubblefield after. he did not comply with commands. No word from officer Neely tonight now, indicted. and on unpaid leave.
