Reiner were stabbed to death, allegedly by his. brother Nick. Jake Reiner describing getting the phone. call from his sister, the deadly accident, a 78 year. old driver losing control, his white SUV slamming onto. the roof of a home, and Dolly Parton's sister sharing an. emotional tribute, how they spent their mornings before. the sun came up, and her call to others on how Dolly would. want her legacy to be honored. News Tonight with David Muir. Good evening, I'm Wade Johnson and for David tonight. we begin with the human catastrophe unfolding. in Nepal. Devastation on a staggering scale. Hundreds of people including at least 90 Americans missing. amid the water, mud, and debris, massive flooding and. landslides carving a path of destruction extending for miles. Tonight new images showing the awesome power. of those floodwaters. A bridge washed away in seconds, people scrambling.

to safety just in time. Construction workers seeing the danger coming, outrunning. the surging water as it closed in. >> Tonight, a desperate search for survivors in. Nepal and Tibet after that catastrophic wall of water.

swept away entire villages. 90 Americans among the 1,300 people still missing. And now new threats raising concern that more. flooding and landslides could strike. With little warning, that unstoppable. torrent crashing into valleys. These people just feet away as it barreled in, screaming and running with only seconds to escape. These construction workers sent. fleeing. Oh my God, oh my God.

That mountain of water more than 150 feet high overtook. the entire valley. Officials say more than 390 people are. dead. This building blasted by water and mud. ABC News confirmed 22 Americans were. inside at the time. Tonight satellite images showing that. structure completely washed away. Families anxious for news about their missing loved. ones. In a desperate post on On Instagram, the family. of Deepak and Madhu Ahuja from North Carolina. sharing these images asking for help locating.

the missing couple. But relief for the family of this American couple. from outside Oakland, California, getting. word their parents are safe. The two seen here shortly after their rescue. Experts suspect the landslide started at a. glacier mountain cliff. The avalanche of ice melting as it rushed down 6,000 feet. of the mountain slope, picking up enough mud and rock. to fill at least 40,000 Olympic swimming pools. New satellite images showing the site three days ago, now. a gaping hole where experts believe the land.

initially gave way. And with hospitals like this one now treating victims. of this deadly disaster, the urgent recovery complicated. by mountains of mud and debris as the search for dozens of. Americans goes through the night here. The U.S. is sending a disaster response advisor plus half. a million dollars in aid with just an awful tragedy. unfolding. Brit Klenedar, thanks to you tonight. Dangerous thunderstorms, flash flooding and winds gusting. up to 70 miles per hour from Washington D.C. to Philadelphia to New York City. ABC's Matt Rivers with the images coming in. Tonight, cars submerged in the Northeast. Forty million Americans from Virginia to Vermont. facing flooding downpours. Streets swamped in a matter of minutes on New. York's Staten Island. Just outside New York City, cars forced to pull over and. waited out on the Garden State Parkway. Traffic cones floating downstream in Princeton.

Hail pummeling South Jersey. The population centers of the I-95 corridor under threat once. again, exactly a week after another storm system overwhelmed. New York City's subway system, swamped drivers and. spawned multiple confirmed tornadoes. Overnight, more violent summer storms near. Dallas, Texas, a terrifying downburst in North Richland. Hills brought intense straight line winds that did major. damage to businesses and knocked out power to thousands.

You never know what mother nature. has in store for you. And with all this bad weather wreaking. havoc at airports across the Northeast, as of right now, nationwide, more than 950 flights canceled, nearly 7000. flights delayed. And it's not Not over yet. Matt Rivers, thanks. Let's get right to ABC's senior. meteorologist Lee Goldberg. Lee, that flood threat in the Northeast continues tonight. Yeah, we were under flash flood warnings here in New York. City for much of the afternoon. The Northeast has been slammed. There's a tornado warning in the Catskills.

of New York right now. So, we've had pea-sized hail, gusts to 70 miles an hour. The severe thunderstorm watch stretches from D.C. all the way to upstate New York. into the evening hours. The rainfall rates 1 to 2 inches an hour from Philly to New. York, more so in Philly though. Some areas could see up to 5 inches of rain. We've seen that in parts of New Jersey. A flood watch goes into tonight. It's the exact opposite in the southwest. Hot and dry, another day of extreme heat warnings. Phoenix, we go to 111 tomorrow. Finally some relief on the way this weekend. And then it's tropical storm Dolly, named. earlier this morning, not named for the beloved.

Dolly Parton this week. However, in her spirit, it won't cause much damage as it weakens. shortly and could actually bring some beneficial. rains to Puerto Rico and parts of the Caribbean. Okay, we'll take that. Lee Goldberg, we appreciate it. Now to the alarming scene on the runway at LAX. A DHL cargo plane making a fiery landing, blowing out. four tires on the main landing gear. And just in tonight, what we're now learning about a new. communication problem between President Trump's Marine. One helicopter and air traffic control. Here's ABC's Alex Stone.

Tonight, one of the nation's busiest runways. forced to shut down after this dramatic fiery landing. caught on camera. I don't know if we blew a tire, but it feels like. the brakes locked up. Sparks flying and tires popping as this DHL cargo jet touched. down Wednesday night at LAX. The pilots telling air traffic control. a landing system malfunctioned, causing the brakes to overheat. You do have a small fire on your left main gear. We're now getting water on it.

It's the latest of several aircraft tire incidents, five in Chicago alone. And tonight, a disturbing moment in the skies. involving Marine One. Marine One, how do you hear? I can't hear Marine One. If you hear Marine One, can you let me know? The aircraft carrying President Trump unable to communicate. with air traffic control. Another helicopter, part of that Marine One squad, forced. to relay messages between the chopper and the tower. The communications failure, coming hours after a new. NTSB report suggested White House construction. may have contributed to an August 4th security breach with.

Marine One and a passenger jet over Washington, D.C. Tower, just want to make sure you copy. Marine One, three minutes to lift. Investigators say controllers at Reagan National Airport. did not hear repeated alerts. Technicians have since taken immediate action and believed. they had fixed the problem until it happened again today. The FAA and NTSB are investigating. Alex Stone joining us now from LAX. And Alex, you've got news on another FAA. investigation involving air traffic controllers.

who allegedly left their posts early the night of that deadly. Air Canada crash at New York's LaGuardia Airport. Witt, tonight sources are telling us the FAA wants. to fire two air traffic controllers who went home. early that night, leaving one air traffic controller. on duty at LaGuardia Airport. We're told it's not uncommon for air traffic controllers to go. home early when it's slow. Witt? Alright, Alex Stone. for us, thank you. Next tonight, President Trump escalating his trade war with. Canada, signing a new executive order renaming Lake.

Ontario Lake America. Canada's Prime Minister and some American. officials pushing back. Here's ABC's Mary Bruce. Tonight, President Trump escalating his trade. war with Canada, signing an executive order. to rename Lake Ontario. We're going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario, effective. immediately, to Lake America. The president fuming since Ontario Premier. Doug Ford unloaded on him when the trade deal. fell apart.

Well, he can kiss my ass as far as I'm concerned. Today Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney noting the name. of the lake dates back more and more. The lake borders New York, whose Governor Kathy Hochul. bluntly rejected the president's new name, posting "New York. won't be calling it that.". It comes as Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. spent the day in court watching his administration. lawyers try to convince a judge to allow President Trump's name.

to go up on the Kennedy Center, telling reporters it would. motivate the president to raise money for renovations. "You need to induce him, entice him, get him to. agree to wear it and do it. And if he didn't do it, you could always. take the letters down.". The administration has even threatened to. demolish the Kennedy Center entirely if Trump's. name doesn't go up. Reporters asking Lutnick if they have that authority. "I have no idea.". No ruling yet from the judge.

And with one more bit of news tonight, we are learning. more about CIA Director John Ratcliffe's unusual. trip to Moscow earlier this week on a massive C-17. military cargo plane. Sources tell us that Ratcliffe flew there in part. to warn the Russians not to attack NATO countries. He also, we're told, brought up Iran. President Trump today, though, saying Vladimir. Putin has assured him he will not attack NATO territory. All right, Mary Bruce, it's great to have you. here in New York, too. Appreciate it. Thank you. In Massachusetts tonight, jury. deliberations underway in the closely watched Lindsay.

Clancy murder trial. The defense claiming she suffered. from postpartum psychosis when she strangled her three. young children. Clancy wiping away tears as a jury of nine. women and three men began its work. ABC's Deborah Roberts at the courthouse tonight. Tonight, after three hours of deliberations, the jury. deciding Lindsay Clancy's fate, calling it a night. The labor and delivery nurse charged with strangling. her three young children after sending husband. Patrick out to run errands. Clancy, visibly emotional at times during closing arguments,

sitting in a wheelchair, paralyzed after jumping out. of her second story window following the killings in 2023. She was a nurse, a daughter, a wife, and a darn good mother. This young lady is not guilty of the killing of her children. because she was suffering from a disease and defect. Clancy's lawyer arguing she's not criminally responsible. because she was in the throes of postpartum psychosis,

worsened by a mix of more than a dozen psychiatric medications. Clonazepam, quetepain, diazepam, diazepam, quetepain, it. goes on and on and on and on. She took the drugs as she was told to take them. She had complete control over her behavior and her emotions. But she knew the difference between right and. wrong during that time. Prosecutors acknowledging Clancy's mental illness, but. arguing that she wanted out of her life and was deliberate. in committing a horrific act.

It was what she had to do to end her misery. But it was a choice. It was a choice, you know, to a moral certainty. She is guilty. The jury is weighing five weeks worth of testimony and. evidence, deciding whether Lindsay Clancy must pay for. her crime with a prison sentence or a lifetime of. mental health treatment. With Deborah Roberts with that emotional testimony. Thank you.

Tonight, an exclusive with Jake Reiner sitting down for. his first interview since his parents Rob and Michelle. Reiner were stabbed to death allegedly by his brother Nick. My parents had unconditional love for all three of us,

and I'll never understand. I don't care how it's explained to me. I don't care what facts come out. I will never understand why this happened. Speaking with Mark Cotarobles from our station, KABC, Jake. says he learned that devastating news in a phone call. from his sister, Romy. Romy told me our dad was dead, and then she. said, "I can't find mom.". You have described that after what happened, it was losing. more than half of your family. That includes Nick. Yeah. Jake's brother Nick has been.

open about his longtime battle with drug addiction and mental. health problems. He's now pleaded not guilty to murder charges. Eight months later, Jake says every day he wishes he. could talk to his parents. I just miss her. I miss her every day. I miss my dad every day. There are some times where I feel like I want. to call them, I want to text them, and realizing. that you can't is devastating in and of itself. In Witt, Jake and Romy Reiner are now carrying. on their parents' charity work at the Children's.
